A member of the Toronto Blue Jays’ coaching staff has departed.
On Thursday morning, Jon Heyman and Joel Sherman of the New York Post reported that Don Mattingly has stepped down from the Blue Jays.
Mattingly joined the Blue Jays for the 2023 season as a bench coach. After making the postseason but losing both Wild Card games, Mattingly’s role changed to become the offensive coordinator. As you know, the 2024 season was a long one for the Blue Jays, finishing with a 74-88 record, near the bottom of the league.
Before the 2025 season, Mattingly returned to being a bench coach, and the Jays went on to win the American League East division, as well as the American League pennant en route to a Game 7 heartbreak in the World Series.
It was the first time in his career that a team Mattingly was a part of played in the World Series. His playing career lasted 14 seasons, all with the New York Yankees, but they never made the World Series in his tenure. Mattingly never made it as a manager or bench coach either.
That said, Mattingly is one of eight individuals who could be inducted into the Hall of Fame through the Contemporary Era ballot. Another former Blue Jay, Carlos Delgado, could also end up in the Hall of Fame if he receives enough votes.
Although the 64-year-old has stepped down, his tenure in baseball is far from over. Heyman reported that Mattingly is open to managing once again, having done so with the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2010-2015, as well as the Miami Marlins from 2016-2022. As a manager, Mattingly has a 443-587 record, making the National League Divisional Series four times and the National League Championship Series once in his career.
The only coaching role that’s open is the Colorado Rockies’ head of baseball operations. It wouldn’t be surprising if Mattingly joins another major league bench this off-season. If he doesn’t, he could be one of the better options for an in-season managerial hire.
It’ll be interesting to see what’s next for Mattingly. Hopefully, he can find a way to win the World Series at some point in his career.
