A fan favourite of Toronto Blue Jays fans has found a new franchise.
On Sunday afternoon, the Kansas City Royals announced they signed Cavan Biggio to a minor league contract.
Biggio was selected in the fifth round of the 2016 draft by the Blue Jays, working his way up to one of their top prospects before making his debut in 2019 alongside Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette. That season, he slashed .234/.364/.429 with 16 home runs in 430 plate appearances for a 115 wRC+ and 2.6 fWAR.
Of any Blue Jay in the COVID season, Biggio was arguably their best hitter, as he slashed .250/.375/.432 with eight home runs in 265 plate appearances for a 122 wRC+ and a 1.4 fWAR. This, along with an expanded playoff, helped the Jays make the postseason for the first time since 2016.
However, Biggio’s strong play tapered off in 2021, as he was moved off his natural second base to play third base. That season, he slashed .224/.322/.356 with seven home runs in 294 plate appearances for an 84 wRC+ and a -0.2 fWAR. His 2022 season wasn’t much better, as Biggio slashed .202/.318/.350 with six home runs in 303 plate appearances for a 97 wRC+ and a 1.3 fWAR.
For the first time since 2020, Biggio posted an above-average wRC+ in 2023, as he slashed .235/.340/.370 with nine home runs in 338 plate appearances for a 102 wRC+ and a 0.9 fWAR. That was short-lived though, as the second baseman slashed .200/.323/.291 with two home runs in 131 plate appearances with the Jays this past season.
Before the trade deadline, the Jays traded him to the Los Angeles Dodgers for relief prospect Braydon Fisher. After 88 plate appearances in Los Angeles, Biggio was designated for assignment and signed with the Giants, before eventually being traded to the  Atlanta Braves in September, ending the 2024 with the National League team.
Hopefully, he can get his career back on track as the Royals are coming off a season where they made the postseason for the first time since 2015 when they won the World Series.
