A former Toronto Blue Jays season has come to an end.
On Sunday morning, the Minnesota Twins announced that Alan Roden was placed on the 60-day Injured List, later reported to be because of a sprained thumb ligament, according to The Athletic’s Aaron Gleeman.
Roden was selected in the third round of the 2022 draft by the Blue Jays. After two good minor league seasons in 2023 and 2024, Roden made the Blue Jays’ Opening Day roster thanks to a strong Spring Training. Unfortunately, Roden struggled to begin the season with the Blue Jays, but found success in the minor leagues once optioned to the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons.
Just minutes before the 2025 trade deadline, the Blue Jays sent him and left-handed pitching prospect Kendry Rojas to the Minnesota Twins in exchange for Ty France and Louie Varland. Rojas pitches for the Twins’ Triple-A team, while Roden was assigned to the Twins’ big league team.
It hasn’t been a good start to Roden’s career with the Twins. In 12 games, the 25-year-old outfielder is slashing .158/.200/.263 with a home run in 40 plate appearances for a 26 wRC+ and -0.2 fWAR. As a whole, Roden finishes the 2025 season slashing .191/.261/.294 with two homers in 153 plate appearances.
Although Roden hasn’t exactly hit the ground running in his rookie season, it’s far too early to give up on the young outfielder. Take Addison Barger, for example. Last season with the Blue Jays, Barger slashed .197/.250/.351 with seven home runs in 225 plate appearances, resulting in a 69 wRC+ and -0.3 fWAR.
So far in 2025, the left-handed batter is slashing .261/.310/.491 with 18 home runs in 379 plate appearances for a 118 wRC+ and 2 fWAR. He’s one of the biggest reasons the Blue Jays have the best record in the American League.
Hopefully, this isn’t a long-term problem for Roden. He has the potential to be a valuable contributor on a postseason team, thanks to his ability to hit for average and draw walks, with some power as well. It’d be nice to see Roden back for Spring Training.
