When one door opens, another door closes.
The Milwaukee Brewers signed infielder and top prospect Cooper Pratt to an eight-year deal worth $50.75 million earlier this week, and former Blue Jays outfielder Steward Berroa was designated for assignment for Pratt to be on the 40-man roster. Pratt will remain in Triple-A.
Signed by the Blue Jays as an international free agent in 2016, he has spent the majority of his career in the Jays system. He made his big league debut in 2024, appearing in 28 games for Toronto while riding the options bus. He put together a .189/.333/.216 slash line with one double, one RBI, and six stolen bases.
Berroa’s time with the Jays came to an end in May of 2025, with the Jays selecting the contract of Braydon Fisher, and Berroa was DFA’d to make room on the 40-man roster. The outfielder would be traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers shortly after in a cash deal, and suited up in 27 games for their Triple-A affiliate before landing on the IL.
The Dodgers would DFA him on July 3rd, and traded him to the Milwaukee Brewers, where he finished out the season. He spent most of his time in the minor leagues outside of two games, where he went hitless across five at-bats.
The Dominican product started the 2026 season on the IL with a right shoulder strain and had appeared in two games for the Nashville Sounds before this recent designation. Barring being picked up by another team either through waivers or trade, Berroa will return to Triple-A with the Brew Crew, as he can’t reject the assignment, unless the Brewers decide to cut ties with the 26-year-old.
