A former Toronto Blue Jays prospect has begun a new chapter.
On Nov. 14, Jimmy Robbins announced via his Twitter account that he has joined the Detroit Tigers organization as their Triple-A bullpen coach.
Collegiately, Robbins pitched for both Troy University and Rollins College before the Blue Jays selected the left-handed pitcher in the 20th round of the 2019 draft. Robbins made his professional debut shortly after, authoring a 2.84 ERA and 3.26 FIP in 19 innings pitched.
Due to the pandemic, Robbins and all other minor league players missed the 2020 season, as it was cancelled. He then missed the 2021 season due to Tommy John surgery, before returning with a vengeance in 2022.
Beginning the season with the Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays, the left-handed pitcher had a 1.56 ERA and 2.77 FIP in 17.1 innings pitched. Upon his promotion to High-A, Robbins made nine starts in 10 appearances, finishing his Vancouver Canadians tenure with a 3.82 ERA and 4.23 FIP.
Robbins’ ERA with the Canadians was inflated due to one start on Jul. 23, where he gave up six earned runs in three innings of work; none of his other outings saw him give up more than two runs. His next turn out on Jul. 31 was his best start of his career, striking out 11 in five innings of one-hit ball.
The left-handed pitcher ended the 2022 season with the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats, posting a 1.52 ERA and 3.33 FIP in 23.2 innings pitched, with a 26.8 K% and 6.2 BB%. Overall, Robbins finished the 2022 season with a 2.59 ERA and 3.62 FIP in 76.1 innings pitched, with a 30.2 K% and 9.8 BB%.
Robbins spent the majority of the 2023 season with the Fisher Cats, posting a 4.67 ERA and 4.45 FIP in 86.2 innings pitched. After two and one-third innings pitched with the Triple-A Buffalo Bisons in 2024, he was traded to the Texas Rangers, where he made nine appearances. Robbins finished his 2024 season with the Atlantic League’s Long Island Ducks.
At the end of the 2024 season, Robbins announced his retirement before joining the Toledo Mud Hens’ coaching staff about a year later. Blue Jays Nation reached out to Robbins, with the former Blue Jays pitcher having this to say about the opportunity:
“I’m truly honored and energized to join the Detroit Tigers organization as the Triple-A Bullpen coach, and I’m looking forward to building relationships, sharpening our staff, and supporting the journey to Detroit. My goal is help build players that are ready to make an immediate positive impact in the Tigers’ pursuit of a championship.”
We here at Blue Jays Nation wish nothing but the best for the 27-year-old as he embarks on a new chapter in his baseball career.
