It’s never an easy weekend heading to T-Mobile Park.
In fact, over the last five years, the Jays are a measly 3-11 there, with a 4.56 team ERA while getting outscored 68-51 in the process. And for as much as the Mariners have seen some struggles this season, they were able to overcome it on Friday night, managing to eke out a 2-1 win.
Kevin Gausman went deep, throwing 104 pitches across six innings, but two runs allowed in the bottom of the third were all the Mariners could muster. Kevin Kiermaier’s solo shot in the top of the sixth, however, was the only run Toronto would score. While the bullpen of Nate Pearson, Genesis Cabrera and Zach Pop were all able to limit the Mariners, once again the bats failed the Jays.
Colour me surprised.
The Jays will see 25-year-old Emerson Hancock opposite their own Yariel Rodriguez on Saturday afternoon. Hancock has had some struggles this season, as seen in his numbers below, with a FIP well above his ERA. Rodriguez, meanwhile, has had some struggles of his own.
After two great starts to start the season, his next three saw him give up 3, 2, and 4 earned runs, but had a great showing on July 1st against the Astros, giving up one earned run, two hits and a walk across 6.2 innings.
