The Toronto Blue Jays put forward a solid showing against Canadian Michael Soroka and the Washington Nationals last night, winning 5-2 and seeing their record above .500 for the first time this early in the campaign. Heading into the 2025 season, George Springer sat six hits away from a Blue Jays milestone, and his multi-hit outing last night against the Nationals got him to the threshold.
With his single through the left side in the eighth inning, Springer now has 500 hits as a member of the Toronto Blue Jays. The right-handed bat drove an inside sinker from Eduardo Salazar between the third base and the shortstop to give him the celebratory knock that also added an insurance run late in the game. The Connecticut product was able to collect the milestone last night after driving a Lucas Sims fastball to left field for a double earlier in the contest, which put him just shy of the mark.
With the hit, he joins 40 others who have surpassed the mark in a Blue Jays uniform and trails Paul Molitor by eight hits on the all-time franchise leaderboard. Tony Fernández leads the way with 1583 hits on record, while Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette rank within the top 50, sitting at 15th (909) and 26th (730), respectively. Only four other current active players in the Major Leagues sit within the top 50 mark for hits, with Kevin Pillar ranking at 29th (641), Teoscar Hernandez tied at 34th (584), Lourdes Gurriel Jr. tied with Justin Smoak at 44th (491), and Randal Grichuk at 50th (422).
For his career, Springer has amassed 1332 hits through 1310 games, spending the first seven years of his career with the Houston Astros. In the AL West, he collected 832 hits, 137 doubles, and 174 home runs to the tune of a .852 OPS. Since joining the Blue Jays, he has seen a slight dip in his overall slash line metrics and also missed a large portion of the 2021 season due to injury, meaning he likely could have hit this mark sometime last year had he been healthy through the full length of his contract.
Springer is off to a hot start this season, collecting six hits through five games. After a dismal spring training and coming off a dreadful 2024 campaign where he set numerous career lows offensively, this milestone is hopefully a continued step in the right direction for what is potentially one of the biggest seasons in recent franchise history.
