George Springer is out with a non-COVID illness, Hyun Jin Ryu will start despite elbow soreness

We got some not-so-good news on the health front for the Blue Jays ahead of Wednesday’s game with the Chicago White Sox.
George Springer isn’t in the lineup as he’s dealing with a non-COVID illness. Charlie Montoyo didn’t give a timetable for Springer’s return but said “he’ll be fine.” Seeing Springer not in the Wednesday’s lineup caused some immediate panic, as it always does, but this is somewhat more encouraging than him resting due to a nagging injury.
And then there’s also Hyun Jin Ryu, who will be making the start on Wednesday despite feeling some elbow soreness. Montoyo said that the Blue Jays will be monitoring Ryu “closely” in this outing, so it wouldn’t be all too surprising if he’s given a quick hook if things go sideways.
Ross Stripling hasn’t pitched since Sunday when he tossed one-and-two-thirds innings in the Blue Jays’ wild 11-10 victory over the Los Angeles Angels, so he should be available to pitch multiple innings if needed.
Ryu spent some time on the Injured List earlier this year with a forearm issue after he had two disastrous outings to start his season. Since returning from that injury, Ryu has posted a 1.72 ERA over the course of three starts against the Tampa Bay Rays, Cincinnati Reds, and L.A. Angels.
