The Blue Jays activated Lourdes Gurriel from the 10-day disabled list today and sent Richard Urena down to Triple-A Buffalo in a corresponding roster move.
Urena was actually quite good, albeit in a small sample, during his recall. Over the course of 30 plate appearances, Urena slashed a .269/.367/.385 line, which is much better than what he was doing with the stick in Buffalo. Anyways, I’m sure we’ll see him again come September.
Gurriel, of course, re-enters action with an absurd 11-game multi-hit streak going. During that 11-game streak, Gurriel slashed a .500/.519/.740 line. He’s been one of the biggest bright spots on the Blue Jays this season. Over the course of that streak, he brought his OPS up from .634 to .844.
He injured himself back on July 29 trying to turn a single into a double against the White Sox. Honestly, given how long he was down for after it happened, it’s great that Gurriel only had to miss a month of action. It looked a lot more serious than it actually ended up being.
Per Ben Nicholson-Smith, Gurriel will hit leadoff for the Jays tonight. That’ll give him the most hacks possible to continue his streak. The MLB record for multi-hit games is 13, set by Rogers Hornsby in 1923.
