The Davis Schneider Era is upon us.

And boy, is it sweet.

Called up from AAA Buffalo Friday morning, Schneider got his first MLB at-bat in the top of the second with the Toronto Blue Jays taking on the Boston Red Sox in Fenway.

Schneider took a James Paxton changeup low and away on his first pitch, and fouled off the second pitch he saw. Paxton’s third pitch of the plate appearance, an 83.8 MPH cutter, came middle-middle and Schneider got all of it sending the ball 377-feet into the first row of the Green Monster.

With a smile on is face, Schneider got to take his first trip around the bases.

The 28th-round pick became just the 136th player in MLB history to hit a home run in a his first at-bat, and the first to do it in 2023.  Three other Blue Jays have hit home runs in their first MLB at bat: Alvis Woods in 1977, Junior Felix in 1989, and most recently, JP Arencibia in 2010.

Schneider also is the first player to debut at Fenway Park and hit a home run in their first at-bat since Gene Lamont did in 1970.

The 5’9, 190 lb. second baseman has taken some time to develop and worked his way up the Blue Jays ranks quickly. Last year, he started the season playing High-A for the Vancouver Canadiens, and earned a callup to AA New Hampshire in June. By September, He worked his way all the way up to AAA Buffalo, where he kicked this season off.

And what a season it has been.

In 87 AAA games this year, he’s slashing .275/.416/.553 with a team-leading 21 home runs — 13 more than the next closest batters, a trio of Ernie Clement, Rafael Lantigua, and Jordan Luplow.
