After staying mostly quiet Monday night, the bats were buzzing on loonie dog night in Toronto, with the Blue Jays evening up the series at one a piece.
It was a bullpen game for the Blue Jays as Braydon Fisher started the game as an opener, working a clean first inning, picking up a strikeout and lowering his ERA to 2.64. He was followed by Spencer Miles, who has worked himself into a bulk relief role, aiming to approach 70 pitches in this outing.
Since filling into this long-man role with a three-inning appearance on May 10th, Miles had not allowed an earned run in 11 innings, racking up 13 strikeouts and walking just three. He entered this contest in the second inning and cruised through three scoreless frames before allowing a single to Heriberto Hernandez that scored Jakob Marsee, after Marsee was able to reach third via an error by Brandon Valenzuela on a steal attempt.
That was the only blemish during what was an otherwise stellar outing for Miles, who threw a season high 66 pitches, striking out three batters and walking just one across 4 1/3 innings. The concern remains his workload, given his limited minor league innings in the past, though he continues to prove his worth at the big league level, with a 2.16 ERA on the season.
It was Sandy Alcantara on the mound for the Marlins in this matchup, looking to find a groove after pitching to a 6.04 ERA so far in May. He would work a clean first inning before Ernie Clement launched a solo home run to left field, giving the Blue Jays an early 1-0 lead, and extending his hit streak to nine games. Then, in the bottom of the third, Daulton Varsho and Jesus Sanchez both singled, setting up Kazuma Okamoto, who drove home Varsho with a single off his own, bringing the Jays’ lead to 2-0.
Alcantara limited the damage over the next two innings, before things went south quickly in the sixth. It began with a solo home run from Yohendrick Pinango to centre field, who continues to hit for power in the middle of the lineup, bringing his SLG % on the year up to .434. Brandon Valenzuela then singled, before George Springer lined a ball off Otto Lopez’s glove, allowing Valenzuela to score, bringing the Jays’ lead up to 4-0.

A few batters later, Jesus Sanchez came up to the plate with the bases loaded after Lenyn Sosa was hit by a pitch and Daulton Varsho walked. On the first pitch of the at-bat, he would unload to right field, hitting the first grand slam of his career, and blowing open the Blue Jays’ lead to 8-1, a lead they wouldn’t relinquish.
Adam Macko and Yariel Rodriguez combined for 1.2 shutout innings before handing the ball over to Tanner Andrews, who made his big league debut Monday night, working a scoreless ninth inning. In Tuesday’s outing, he collected his first MLB strikeout and completed two shutout innings, finishing off an 8-1 victory for the Blue Jays and evening up the series at 1-1.
It will be Kevin Gausman on the mound for the Jays on Wednesday afternoon, with the Marlins sending flamethrower Eury Perez to the bump, for a 1:07 pm EST start. The Blue Jays will look to keep the offence humming as they attempt to win their second straight series.
