The Toronto Blue Jays’ offence was held in check on Tuesday night, dropping the middle game of their three-game series with the New York Mets 3-0.
A day after mustering only four hits, the Blue Jays’ offence was able to get six during the loss, but only one came on the extra-base variety. With another lacklustre showing, the Blue Jays now find themselves with a record of 40-46 through 86 games played.
Like Monday night, the Mets’ lineup once again struggled, but they were able to slug two solo home runs to power them to their 36th victory of the season. After four shutout frames, designated hitter Francisco Alvarez put the Mets on the board with a solo home run. Alvarez slammed a 1-2 fastball from Kevin Gausman 415 feet to center field for his ninth home run of the season.
After Gausman was able to hold the Mets off the board in the top of the sixth inning, Mason Fluharty entered to begin the seventh frame. Fluharty was able to get Brett Baty to fly out to begin the inning, but Luis Torrens followed by slamming his second home run of the season into the Mets’ bullpen.
In the top of the ninth, the Mets made sure to tack on another insurance run to give closer Devin Williams a three-run cushion for his save opportunity. A.J. Ewing opened with a single before advancing to second base on a throwing error on a pickoff attempt by Tommy Nance. Ewing advanced to third base on an Alvarez groundout before coming around to score on a Baty sacrifice fly.
Even without any real form of offence, one bright spot to take away from Tuesday’s loss was Gausman’s night. After two uncharacteristic outings in which Gausman allowed 13 runs over eight innings, the 35-year-old responded by turning in a pitching line of 6.0 IP, 5 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 2 BB, 7 K.
For the season, Gausman is now 4-7 with a 4.19 ERA and a 1.19 WHIP over his 18 starts. The right-hander has now thrown 101 innings with 100 strikeouts and has held opposing teams to a .247 average.
Much of the credit for the Mets’ win on Tuesday has to go to starting pitcher Nolan McLean. McLean kept the Blue Jays off-balance for much of the contest and turned in a pitching line of 6.0 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 ER, 2 BB, 7 K. McLean’s only real threat of trouble came in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Daulton Varsho ripped a two-out double, followed by a Luis Urías walk, which brought Yohendrick Piñango to the plate with runners on first and second with two out. After getting ahead 1-0 in the count, Piñango got a 95.6 MPH sinker from McLean but was only able to bounce one to Bo Bichette at third base, who easily threw out the 24-year-old to end the opportunity.
Backed by some strong defence by Bichette at third base, Brooks Raley, Luke Weaver, and Williams held the Blue Jays off the board to set up the series rubber match on Canada Day.
Freddy Peralta will start for the Mets on Wednesday, while the Blue Jays will use Braydon Fisher as an opener after moving Patrick Corbin to the bullpen. First pitch is set for 3:07 p.m. EST at Rogers Centre.
