Well, that wasn’t great.
On Friday afternoon, the Toronto Blue Jays started a three-game series against the New York Mets, falling 5-0 to snap their four-game winning streak. Let’s take a look at what happened.
The Mets struck early. Francisco Lindor hit a lead-off double, and while Kevin Gausman was able to get Juan Soto to pop out, he wasn’t able to get Pete Alonso out, as the first baseman hit his third home run of the season to make it 2-0.
After Gausman got an out and walked Lindor, he was pulled from the game and replaced by Mason Fluharty. The lefty was brought in for the lefty-on-lefty matchup against Juan Soto, who hit a double on the second pitch to make it 3-0. In the same inning, the Mets added two more runs, as the Blue Jays fell 5-0.

Takeaways…
The lack of home runs this season from the top third of the Jays’ lineup is concerning. Bo Bichette, Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and Anthony Santander all have yet to hit a home run, but Guerrero Jr. did go 2-3 today with a walk.
Guerrero Jr. accounted for half of the Blue Jays’ four hits, with George Springer getting the other two hits thanks to a triple and a single. It’s still too early to declare that he’s back to his pre-2023 self, but this was his fifth multi-hit game in seven starts.
The game was lost in the sixth inning. Coming into the top of the sixth, the Jays only trailed 2-0 and with Mets’ starter Tylor Megill still pitching, he walked two of the first three batters he faced. However, Reed Garrett replaced him, striking out Andrés Giménez and Alejandro Kirk to end the inning.
Ernie Clement nearly hit his first run of the season and was even able to trot the base paths. However, after video review, it was clearly hit foul.
Kevin Gausman had an okay start, pitching five and one-third innings with three earned runs allowed and two walks. Notably, he didn’t get a strikeout in the game, with Jacob Barnes getting the only Blue Jays’ strikeout.
Mason Fluharty had a rough outing after being brought in to face Juan Soto. He didn’t retire an out and gave up two earned runs while throwing just three pitches. Yariel Rodríguez also pitched in this game, walking a batter in his inning of work.
The Jays return to action on Saturday at 7:10 PM ET with Chris Bassitt facing his former team. The Jays need to win their next two to avoid losing their first series of the season.
