The Toronto Blue Jays win streak has come to an end.
On Friday evening, the team headed to the Houston Astros’ Spring Training ballpark, falling 6-5 to the 2022 World Series champions to move to 12-7-1. Let’s take a look at what happened in the game.
In the top of the first, the Blue Jays opened the score. First, Andrés Giménez hit an RBI triple to score two runs, Will Wagner and Davis Schneider, before Ernie Clement hit a sacrifice fly to score Giménez.
That lead wouldn’t last though. In the bottom of the second, Quincy Hamilton hit an RBI single for the Astros to make it a 3-1 game. In the bottom of the fourth, Zach Dezenzo hit a home run to make it 3-2.
The Blue Jays lost their lead in the bottom of the fifth, as Yainer Díaz hit his second home run of Spring Training, a two-run blast to make it a 4-3 game. Hamilton followed that up with a ground-rule double, adding a fifth Astros run.
However, the Blue Jays didn’t go quietly. In the top of the seventh, Rainer Nuñez hit an RBI single to score Steward Berroa, followed by an Addison Barger sacrifice fly to tie the game at five. Unfortunately, Tyler Whitaker hit an RBI single to walk off the Jays.
Takeaways…
The loss snapped the Blue Jays’ five-game win streak dating back to last Saturday. Still, their 12-7-1 record is the best in the Grapefruit League and they have the third-best win percentage in Spring Training. Does it mean anything? Not really, but it’s cool to see.
Unfortunately, the Blue Jays bats were rather quiet in this game. Andrés Giménez’s triple was their only extra-base hit, while Will Wagner had two singles. Rainer Nuñez, Michael Turconi, and Ernie Clement had the other three singles.
Starting the game was Yariel Rodríguez, who gave up two earned runs, three walks, and struck out four in 3.2 innings pitched. Richard Lovelady gave up an earned run in his inning of work while Andrew Bash allowed two earned runs in his third of an inning.
Eric Lauer made his second appearance of Spring Training, striking out three in his inning of work. It will be interesting to see how the left-handed pitcher figures into the Jays’ plans this season. Tommy Nance struck out a batter in a scoreless inning, while Josh Walker was tagged with the loss.
The Jays return to action on Saturday at 1:05 PM ET against the St. Louis Cardinals. Their prospects will also play against the Minnesota Twins’ prospects in the second annual Spring Breakout game.
