The Toronto Blue Jays undefeated Spring Training has come to an end.
On Wednesday afternoon, the Blue Jays faced off against the Philadelphia Phillies, falling 9-6 with their late comeback attempt falling short. Let’s take a look at what happened in this game.
The Blue Jays opened the scoring in the bottom of the second with back-to-back sac flies from Tyler Heineman and Myles Straw. However, the Phillies cut the lead in half in the top of the third thanks to a home run from Gabriel Rincones Jr.
It all came crashing down for the Blue Jays in the sixth inning, as errors and hit-by-pitches came back to haunt them. They were finally able to get out of the inning thanks to a poor base running decision from the Phillies, but not before the Phillies put up a five-spot to take a 6-2 lead.
The Phillies continued to build on their lead, as they took a 9-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth. Prospects RJ Schreck and Charles McAdoo led that inning off with a walk and after an out, Rainer Nuñez hit a double to score a run. Another walk by Will Robertson loaded the bases for Eddie Micheletti Jr., who singled in two runs to make it a 9-5 game.
Toronto scored another run thanks to Michael Stefanic’s sac fly. They had the tying run at the plate in Jacob Sharp, but he struck out to end the game with the Phillies winning 9-6. The Blue Jays moved to 3-1 this spring with the loss.

Takeaways…

It was a pretty good game for Eddie Micheletti Jr., who had two singles in his two plate appearances. Selected in the eighth round of the 2024 draft, the outfielder slashed .292/.422/.458 with two home runs in 90 plate appearances with the Single-A Dunedin Blue Jays in 2024.
Rainer Nuñez also had an eventful game, hitting a double and a single while committing an error. He also made a nice catch in the infield. Other players with a double were Bo Bichette and Ernie Clement (who also had a single). Alejandro Kirk, George Springer, Myles Straw, Tyler Heineman, and Alan Roden each had a single.
Starting the game for the Blue Jays was José Berríos, who pitched two and two third innings with two strikeouts. Unfortunately, he gave up a home run in this game, but it was a solid outing from the starter.
Some in the bullpen had a good day, such as Brendon Little, Zach Pop, Josh Walker, and Jimmy Burnette. However, Jacob Barnes struggled mightily, giving up three earned runs without getting an out. Richard Lovelady gave up two runs (one earned) in an inning of work and Mason Fluharty gave up an earned run after two hit batters.
The Blue Jays are back in action on Thursday with a game against the Baltimore Orioles with Ethan Lucas as the expected starter. Unfortunately, that game won’t be televised.
