The Toronto Blue Jays have won their second straight series.
On Thursday afternoon, the Jays faced off against the San Francisco Giants in the Bay Area, defeating the National League West team 5-3 to move to 43-50.
The Jays got the scoring going early in the game, as they put up a three-spot in the top of the first. George Springer and Spencer Horwitz each reached on a single to lead off the inning, with the latter reaching second thanks to an error. After a Vladimir Guerrero Jr. ground out and a Justin Turner sac fly, the Blue Jays had a 2-0 lead. The inning was capped off by a home run by Danny Jansen, his first since May 20.
However, the Giants answered right back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first. After Kevin Gausman got Jorge Soler to ground out, Patrick Bailey reached with a single and was cashed in by Heliot Ramos two-run shot to make it a 3-2 game for the Jays.
The score stayed this way for a while, but Leo Jiménez eventually hit his first career-RBI and the game-winning run in the top of the fourth to make it 4-2.
The FIRST @MLB RBI for Leo Jiménez!
In the top of the fifth, Spencer Horwitz hit his fourth home run of the season and his fifth-career home run in the big leagues to make it 5-2. Mike Yastrzemski hit a homer in the bottom of the ninth, but the Blue Jays took this one 5-3 and won the series.
Your newest Splash Brother: Spencer Horwitz đŠ
Things worth mentioningâŠ
Spencer Horwitzâs home run went out of the stadium, but bounced once on the concrete before landing in McCovey Cove. Unfortunately, this doesnât count as a âsplash hitâ, but it was damn close to being the 164th homer to land in the water.
Kevin Gausman had a terrific game, finishing with a line of 7 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 3 K with a home run given up to move his season ERA to 4.50. This is just what he and the Blue Jays needed heading into the All-Star break.
The bullpen only pitched two innings, with Zach Pop pitching a clean eighth inning and Chad Green picking up the save while giving up an earned run.
Of the Blue Jaysâ 10 hits, only two of them were of the extra-base variety, as Danny Jansen hit his sixth home run of the season and Spencer Horwitz hit his fourth. Each had a multi-hit game, as did Kevin Kiermaier.
Up next: The Blue Jays play one more series before the All-Star break, heading to Arizona to face the 2023 National League pennant winners, the Arizona Diamondbacks. Yariel RodrĂguez is slated to start for the Jays, while the Diamondbacksâ starter is to be determined.
