Can anyone stop Daulton Varsho?
On Thursday afternoon, the Toronto Blue Jays returned to action, hosting the Baltimore Orioles in Dunedin. They beat their divisional rivals 6-4 to move to 12-6-1 this Spring Training, the best record in the Grapefruit League.
In the bottom of the first, the Blue Jays opened the scoring thanks to an RBI single from Daulton Varsho. However, the Orioles had a big top of the second, as Nick Gordon hit a double, Luis Vazquez hit into a fielder’s choice, and Vimael Machín hit a double to give the Orioles a 3-1 lead.
The score stood that way until the bottom of the fifth. With two runners on, Bo Bichette hit a single to score Orelvis Martínez, followed by an RBI single from Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to score another runner. The inning was capped off by Varsho hitting his fourth home run of the spring.
Two more runs were scored in the game. In the bottom of the eighth, Christian Bethancourt hit an RBI single to score Alan Roden. Jud Fabian hit an RBI single in the top of the ninth for the Orioles to make it 6-4.
Takeaways…
If this is what Daulton Varsho is going to hit like in the regular season, the Blue Jays are going to have a good season. It remains to be seen whether or not he’s ready for fielding duties but if he can hit home runs like this, he’ll surely start the season as the team’s designated hitter.
The Jays totaled 11 hits in this game. On top of the home run, Varsho hit a single, while Vladimir Guerrero Jr. also had a multi-hit day that included a double. Myles Straw’s good Spring Training continued, as he also hit a double. Orelvis Martínez hit two singles, while Bo Bichette, Anthony Santander, Andrés Giménez, and Christian Bethancourt hit a single.
Easton Lucas is having a rough Spring Training, as he gave up three earned runs in two innings and two-thirds on Thursday. Mason Fluharty struck out the only batter he faced while fellow left-handed pitcher Ryan Yarbrough struck out two in his two innings of work. Both Yimi García and Chad Green have yet to give up an earned run, with García striking out three in his inning of work.
Nick Sandlin pitched well, giving up a hit and striking out a batter in his inning of work. Zach Pop picked up the save, striking out two and allowing two hits while giving up an unearned run.
The Blue Jays return to action on Friday at 6:05 PM ET against the Houston Astros.
