The Toronto Blue Jays are on a roll.
On Sunday afternoon, they completed the sweep of the Baltimore Orioles, defeating the bad bird team of the American League East by a score of 11-2 to bring their season record to 87-62. With the win, the Jays will, at worst, maintain their three-game lead of the American League East, depending on the result of the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees game on Sunday evening.
It was the Orioles that opened the scoring, as Coby Mayo hit his second home run in as many games, going deep off Shane Bieber in the top of the second. The Jays were able to tie the game in the bottom of the third, as Andrés Giménez hit a double, followed by a double from George Springer.
After that, it was all the Blue Jays. Both Alejandro Kirk and Daulton Varsho reached on infield singles, bringing Ernie Clement to the plate with one out against a lefty. He hit his 30th double of the season down the line, scoring both runners to make it 3-1.
Leading off the bottom of the fifth was Springer. On a 3-0 count, the next pitch was outside but was called a strike, which worked out well for Springer as he hit his 29th home run of the season on the fifth pitch of the at-bat for a 4-1 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, Joey Loperfido hit his fourth double of the season to make it 5-1, but Colton Cowser hit his 14th home run to make it a three-run lead once again. The Jays’ big inning came in the bottom of the seventh, as they hung a six-spot on the Orioles thanks to a two-run double by Addison Barger, RBI singles from Kirk and Clement, and an RBI groundout from Loperfido.

Takeaways…

While it wasn’t perfect, Shane Bieber’s fifth start of the season was a good one. He went six innings, giving up one earned run, four hits, and a walk, while striking out five. Bieber’s season ERA sits at 3.72 after throwing his second quality start as a Blue Jay.
Bieber going six innings meant that the bullpen only had to cover three innings. Louis Varland pitched an inning, striking out two but giving up a home run in his inning of work. Ryan Borucki gave up two hits and a walk, but struck out a batter in two scoreless innings of work.
George Springer’s incredible career rebound season continued on Sunday, as he hit two doubles and a home run to bring his OPS to .949. Andrés Giménez, Ernie Clement, Joey Loperfido, Addison Barger, and Daulton Varsho all had a double as well. Clement and Varsho had two-hit games, while Alejandro Kirk finished with three hits in his four plate appearances.
Although the Jays smashed the Orioles, this was technically a comeback victory, as they were down 1-0 early in the game. It was their 46th comeback victory of the season, leading all of the major leagues.
With the win, the Blue Jays completed their 10th sweep of the season, tied for the second-most in the big leagues. Last season, the 74-88 Blue Jays only had five sweeps all season. It’s truly mind-boggling how much better this season has gone.
In terms of their lead on the American League East, it stands at 3.5, pending the results of the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox game on Sunday evening. A Yankees win gives the Jays a three-game division lead (with the tiebreaker), and a Yankees loss gives them a four-game division lead. Moreover, the Detroit Tigers also won on Sunday, meaning the Jays have a 2.5-game lead in the American League.
Overall, the Blue Jays’ magic number to clinch a postseason berth is five games, while they need 10 games to clinch the division. Their last road trip of the season starts Monday, as they head to Tampa Bay to take on the Rays for a four-game series with a start time of 7:35 PM ET. Starting that game will be Trey Yesavage, who is set to make his big league debut.
