The Toronto Blue Jays have gained some separation from the New York Yankees.
On Friday evening, the Blue Jays thumped the Yankees 7-1, moving their record to 82-59 and increasing the division lead to four games. Let’s take a look at what went on in this game!
Before the Yankees even got a chance to bat, the Blue Jays added three runs. With a runner on first, a 2-2 count, and two outs, Bo Bichette hit a double to score the opening run. Alejandro Kirk drew a walk to load the bases, with Nathan Lukes hitting a two-RBI single for a 3-0 lead.
The Jays continued to make Yankees’ starter Cam Schlittler work, as Bo Bichette hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded for a 4-0 lead. In the bottom of the second, Giancarlo Stanton hit a solo home run, the Yankees’ only run of the game.
In the top of the fifth, the Jays got that run back thanks to a solo home run off the bat of Vladimir Guerrero Jr., his 23rd of the season. Ernie Clement hit a double in the top of the eighth, scoring another run, followed by a Daulton Varsho RBI-double to make it 7-1.

Takeaways…

What a start it was from Kevin Gausman, as he gave up one earned run and a walk in his eight innings of work. Gausman also struck out five to drop his season ERA to 3.63. Braydon Fisher was the only reliever to pitch out of the Jays’ bullpen, allowing a walk in what was a scoreless ninth.
On the opposite end, Yankees’ starter Cam Schlittler threw just an inning and two-thirds, being pulled after giving up his fourth run. The Jays made him throw 40 pitches in the first and 26 in the second before being pulled.
As for their offence, the Blue Jays’ stars did what they were supposed to do. Vladimir Guerrero Jr. had a four-hit game, hitting three singles and a home run. Bo Bichette went 3-3 with a double, two singles, and a walk. Daulton Varsho also had a multi-hit game, hitting his 10th double of the season as well as a single.
Ernie Clement hit his 27th double of the season, and Nathan Lukes’ two-RBI single gave the Jays a 3-0 lead in the first.
With the win, the Blue Jays’ winning streak is now at three games. Moreover, their lead over the Yankees increased to four games with a tiebreaker. The jury is still out on how the Boston Red Sox do, as they play a late game against Gabriel Moreno and the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Game two of the series is at 1:05 PM ET on Saturday, as Chris Bassitt is the expected starter for the Blue Jays. A win would give the Blue Jays a series and put them five games ahead of the Yankees.
