That wasn’t a great way to end the series.
On Sunday afternoon, the Toronto Blue Jays played the Minnesota Twins in the series finale, falling 6-3 to snap their four-game winning streak. With the loss, the Jays moved to 35-30, the same record as the Twins. Let’s take a look at what happened in this one.
In the top of the first, Ernie Clement reached on a two-out single. Next up was Alan Roden, who hit his fourth double of the season to give the Jays an early 1-0 lead. Unfortunately, the Twins took the lead in the bottom half of that inning, as Christian Vazquez grounded out with the bases loaded and Trevor Larnach hit a sacrifice fly to give the Twins a 2-1 lead.
The Jays restored their one-run lead in the top of the third, as Alejandro Kirk singled in Bo Bichette to tie it at two. Next up was George Springer, who hit a double to drive in a run and put runners on second and third. Nathan Lukes struck out, and Clement flied out to end the inning.
It was all the Twins from there. Bowden Francis allowed back-to-back home runs off the bats of Brooks Lee and Vaquez to give the Twins a 4-3 lead. That was all they’d need, but Ty France’s double drove in their fourth run and Byron Buxton walked with the bases loaded to give the Twins a 6-3 lead.

Takeaways…

It was another tough outing for Bowden Francis, as he went just three and one-third innings with four earned runs, five walks, and two home runs given up to bring his season ERA to 6.12. This is the Jays’ third loss in their last 13 games, with all three of their losses coming in a Francis start. Granted, the outing against the Texas Rangers was a good one, throwing five scoreless innings.
Mason Fluharty had a tough outing, pitching one inning with two earned runs allowed and a walk. Erik Swanson pitched the final two-thirds of the inning Fluharty started, walking two, allowing a hit, and striking out a batter.
Braydon Fisher still has yet to allow an earned run from the bullpen, as he got out of a bases-loaded jam thanks to a nice throw from Myles Straw. His streak is now at 12.1 innings of scoreless baseball as a reliever.
Paxton Schultz pitched the final inning, striking out the side while allowing two hits to bring his season ERA to 3.06. Thanks to the three strikeouts, Schultz’s K% sits at an impressive 31.2%.
As for the hitters, it was a quiet day for the Blue Jays’ bats aside from run-scoring doubles from Alan Roden and George Springer. Ernie Clement, Nathan Lukes, and Alejandro Kirk hit singles, with the latter also driving in a run with his single.
The Jays are right back at it on Monday, as they head to St. Louis to face the Cardinals for a three-game series. Jose Berrios is expected to start for the Jays as they look to get back to their winning ways.
