The Toronto Blue Jays are back in the win column.
On Tuesday evening, the Jays started a three-game series against the Cleveland Guardians, defeating the American League Central team 10-6 to move to 42-36, six games over .500. It was a good bounceback after an embarrassing series loss at the hands of the lowly Chicago White Sox. Let’s take a look at what happened in this one!
Toronto got the party started in the top of the first, as Ernie Clement hit his 17th double of the season to drive in Bo Bichette. Clement was driven in thanks to an RBI single from Alejandro Kirk.
Thanks to a fielding error in the top of the fourth, George Springer was able to score to give the Jays a 3-0 lead. In the top of the fifth, Kirk hit his second RBI single to give the Blue Jays a 4-0 lead. The only blemish on Eric Lauer’s stat line was a solo home run from Carlos Santana in the bottom of the sixth.
Toronto got a run back thanks to Jonatan Clase’s RBI single, but the Guardians made them sweat thanks to Lane Thomas hitting a three-run homer to make it 6-4. Without question, Springer had the biggest hit of the game, as he hit a grand slam to give Toronto a 10-4 lead in the top of the eighth. The Guardians added two more, one in the bottom of the eighth and one in the bottom of the ninth, but the grand slam was enough for the 10-6 victory.
SPRINGER DINGER. GRAND SLAM. CONCLUSIVE.
Takeaways…
Springer’s grand slam in the top of the eighth was his eighth career. After Tuesday’s game, where he had three hits, the outfielder is slashing .256/.354/.466 with 11 home runs in 285 plate appearances for a 131 wRC+. Who saw this coming?
The only other extra-base hit came courtesy of Ernie Clement, his 17th double of the season. He, along with Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Alejandro Kirk, and Jonatan Clase, had two-hit games, with Kirk and Clase each driving in two runs.
Eric Lauer continues to give the Blue Jays excellent starts, as he pitched five and one-third innings with one earned run given up, three walks, and five strikeouts to bring his season ERA to 2.21. The spot in the rotation is his.
Braydon Fisher got Lauer out of the sixth, striking out one of the two batters he faced to maintain his perfect ERA coming out of the pen. The rest of the relievers didn’t do all that well, though.
Starting with Mason Fluharty, he walked two of the three batters he faced. Both runs were cashed in thanks to Lane Thomas’ home run, given up by Chad Green. This was Green’s 10th home run given up this season, the most for any reliever in the league. Tied for second in that stat is Jeff Hoffman, not great.
Paxton Schultz pitched an inning, giving up two walks and an earned run on a sacrifice fly. Yariel Rodriguez gave up a rare run in his inning of work, as Kyle Manzardo took him deep.
The Jays return to action on Wednesday with a chance to win their second series in their last four. Max Scherzer will make his first start since March, with the first pitch coming at 6:40.
