Though it hasn’t yet been officially announced, all the Blue Jays beat writers are saying Charlie Montoyo is going to be the team’s next manager.

Montoyo grew up in the Montreal Expos organization and, yep, you guessed it, mentored Vlad Guerrero Sr. as he broke into the Major Leagues. This will be his first big league managing gig, but he’s managed at just about every level. He joined the expansion Devil Rays as manager of their rookie league team when they joined the league in 1997 and he’s been on the Rays Major League coaching staff since 2015. He interviewed against Kevin Cash for the Rays managerial gig that year too.

Like I said when I wrote about him interviewing the other day, grabbing somebody from the Rays organization is always a good thing. They do well for themselves despite operating on a shoestring budget, they’re progressive, and they seem to be loaded with high-quality and talented people. Given the fact he was with the Rays organization, you have to expect that he’s got an openness and understanding of new-age analytics, which is a priority for the organization.

I’m not going to pretend to know a whole bunch about Montoyo, but, on the surface, this looks like a good choice for this group.Here’s a documentary on Montoyo I found on YouTube that’ll give you a good idea of who this guy is and what he’s all about.
