Jake Bloss is hoping to use the Arizona Fall League to get him back on track.
After injuries derailed much of the past two seasons for Bloss, he headed to Arizona to continue his development, as he looks to secure a spot with the Toronto Blue Jays in 2027.
“The reason we went with the Fall League is because in Winter Ball, the goal is to win a championship for your team. That’s what they care about, which is what every team should care about, but if the plan is to throw two to three innings, but they need to win the game, you’re going to be in the game as long as they think you’re going to help them win,” Bloss said while speaking to MLB.com earlier this month. “Here, you can kind of have a little bit stricter of a regimen coming off an injury. I think that’s usually a positive. So, it’s nice to have an environment where you can experiment with pitch shape and mixes with no consequences.”
Through three starts, the experiment has been a success, as Bloss has recorded a 2.70 ERA and a 0.75 WHIP. The right-hander has struck out six batters and walked only one across 6.2 innings pitched, while also holding opponents to an impressive .182 average.
On Tuesday night, Bloss made his third start with the Mesa Solar Sox, and it was the best to date. Bloss turned in a pitching line of 2.2 IP, 1 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 6 K and threw 34 pitches (28 strikes) in the outing.
The lone damage off Bloss came in the bottom of the second inning by way of a solo home run by Houston Astros prospect Nehomar Ochoa Jr. on an 0-1 curveball that hung. Bloss’ fastball touched 95.6 MPH during the start, which is the same number he topped out at during his first start in the AFL.
After working his way back from elbow surgery to repair his ulnar collateral ligament, Bloss made 11 starts across four minor league levels. On June 18, Bloss was assigned to Triple-A Buffalo to make his first start with the Bisons since May 3, 2025.
Over five starts with the Bisons, Bloss went 0-3 with an 8.69 ERA and a 1.68 WHIP. The 25-year-old struck out 10 batters across 19.2 innings pitched and was hit at a .333 clip. Following his start on July 11, Bloss was diagnosed with a teres major injury that ultimately cost him the remainder of the 2026 campaign.
Listed as the Blue Jays’ No. 11-ranked prospect per MLB Pipeline, Bloss should enter next spring with a chance to compete for a spot in the Blue Jays’ rotation. Before being acquired by the Blue Jays from the Houston Astros on July 29, 2024, the righty had made three starts in the majors.
During that span, Bloss went 0-1 with a 6.94 ERA and a 1.63 WHIP. Bloss struck out 11 batters across 11.2 innings and displayed some of the potential that made him a third-round draft pick during the 2023 MLB draft.
