The road back up the mountain has taken a sudden detour for right-hander Jake Bloss.
Coming out of the All-Star break, the Toronto Blue Jays’ pitching prospect landed on the seven-day minor-league injured list, and, on Saturday, manager John Schneider revealed the 25-year-old has been sidelined with a teres major injury in his right shoulder.
Due to the nature of this ailment, the organization is still evaluating the severity of it — needing to determine if it’s a strain, tear or rupture — before they map out a recovery plan. He’s yet to receive any treatment and remains in a holding pattern for now.
“I know that injury never really sounds great, but there’s different extents to it. So figuring out what the extent of it is,” Schneider said.
This is another frustrating injury blow for both Bloss, who’s already made 11 starts this season (five with Triple-A Buffalo) since returning from Tommy John surgery, and the Blue Jays’ depleted rotation depth beyond a starting five that includes ace Dylan Cease, Kevin Gausman, Trey Yesavage, Shane Bieber and Spencer Miles.
Amazingly, Bloss returned to action in just 12 months after undergoing season-ending UCL surgery in May 2025. He also strung a pair of impressive Triple-A outings together heading into the break, tossing 8.1 innings of two-run ball (one earned run) on seven hits and two walks while striking out three.
The immediate hope is that this latest ailment doesn’t derail the remainder of his 2026 season. Bigger picture, however, since Bloss will be out of minor-league options starting next season, the Blue Jays would prefer to give him some runway against major-league hitters before the 2025 campaign concludes.
Should they sell ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline, it’d likely supply Bloss with a platform to do so if Gausman and/or Bieber end up part of that sell-off.
But whether that’ll remain feasible will be determined in the next week or so.
