The Buffalo Bisons picked up a 2-1 victory over the Rochester Red Wings on Saturday, highlighted by some notable performances from a couple of newly acquired prospects.
Right-handed pitcher Jake Bloss got the start for Buffalo, his first since being acquired from the Houston Astros as part of the return for Yusei Kikuchi a couple of weeks ago.
Immediately ranked the third-best prospect in the Blue Jays’ system by MLB Pipeline, Bloss went two-and-two-thirds innings and scattered three hits and one walk without allowing a run. He struck out two batters and averaged 93 miles per hour on his fastball while also flashing a slider that topped out at 90 miles per hour.
Bloss’ debut for the Bisons was just the second start he’s made at the Triple-A level. Selected in the third round of the 2023 MLB Draft, Bloss started the 2024 season with Houston’s High-A affiliate, moved up to Double-A after four starts, and was called up to the Astros in June.
He made his Major League debut against the Baltimore Orioles and allowed two earned runs over three-and-two-thirds innings. Bloss was sent down to Triple-A but came back up after just one start. He had a solid start against the Miami Marlins and got rocked in his next outing on the road against the Oakland A’s.
Through 14 minor league starts this season, Bloss has tossed 68 2/3 innings and owns a 1.57 ERA. He’s struck out 65 batters, walked 22, and has only allowed three home runs.
After Bloss came out of the game, Luis Quinones came in and finished off the third inning before tossing two more scoreless frames in the fourth and the fifth. Hayden Juenger got through the sixth and seventh unscathed, Brandon Eisert allowed Rochester’s first run of the game to cross the plate in the eighth, and Mason Fluharty finished off the game in the ninth and earned his third save of the season.
The star of the day offensively for the Bisons was Jonatan Clase, who was acquired from the Seattle Mariners in exchange for Yimi Garcia. The switch-hitting outfielder went 2-for-4 in the leadoff spot with two doubles. Clase has a .333 batting average and a .908 on-base plus slugging percentage in eight games with Buffalo.
