The Toronto Blue Jays are starting to get some pitching help, and right-hander Jake Bloss is another name to keep an eye on this summer.
The right-hander missed most of the 2025 season after undergoing UCL surgery, and the 24-year-old has made a handful of rehab starts in the lower levels of the minors to begin the 2026 season.
Yesterday against the Daytona Tortugas, Bloss tossed 4.1 scoreless innings, finishing the day with two hits allowed, one walk, and five strikeouts across 61 pitches and a 67.2% strike rate. The right-hander produced eight whiffs on the day and ranked well with his velocity, hitting the 97 MPH mark four times in the eventual 9-0 win.
Bloss started the outing with a pop-out and two groundouts against the Tortugas’ top hitters, needing just seven pitches to get through the frame. He would notch his first strikeout in the second inning, getting Ichiro Cano to swing under a 96 MPH fastball up in the zone. The Jays’ pitcher would walk the next batter, but countered with his second punchout to finish off the inning unscathed.
The Jays would give Bloss some major run support in the bottom of the second inning, plating eight runs and giving the pitcher some much-needed leeway to work with.
Bloss would start the third inning with a single through to the right side, but once again countered with a punchout. Needing four pitches, Bloss dotted an inside curveball to freeze Anielson Buten for the first out of the inning. The North Carolina product then got Kyle Henley to ground into a double play, ending the threat on the base paths and the inning.
Entering the top of the fourth inning, Bloss added two more punchouts – both via the swinging K – and another groundout to head to the top of the fifth. He would face two more batters before being lifted in favour of reliever Javen Coleman, who is also making some rehab appearances in Dundein.
With this latest outing, Bloss drops his season ERA to 2.81 across five starts (three with the FCL, two in Dunedin) with 21 strikeouts across 16 innings. The right-hander could see another outing or two in Dunedin to continue building the pitch count up, but could be moved to Buffalo later this week as Dylan Cease, Max Scherzer, and Shane Bieber are nearing the end of their respective stints with the Bisons soon.
