Toronto Blue Jays left-hander Joe Mantiply appeared in his second rehab game with Single-A Dunedin on Saturday night, but unfortunately the results weren’t as good as his first.
After throwing a scoreless inning on Wednesday during Dunedin’s 7–5 loss against the Clearwater Threshers, Mantiply was tasked with the bottom of the fifth against the Threshers once again.
The frame opened with Mantiply allowing back-to-back singles to Jack Hopko and Cade Climie. Both of the hits came off of Mantiply’s sinker to set the Threshers up with runners on first and second with nobody out.
After getting Victor Cardoza to ground into a force out, Reece Moroney stepped up and drilled an 0-2 changeup from Mantiply off the wall in left-centre field to cut Dunedin’s lead to 4-1.
With runners on second and third and only one away, Mantiply got ahead of Matthew Ferrara 0-2 in the count, but once again, the 35-year-old was unable to finish the at-bat. Ferrara lined a soft single to right field off an 89.2 MPH sinker to bring home two runs and make it 4-3.
After a fielder’s choice tied the game up at 4-4, Mantiply made quick work of Nolan Beltran for his final out of the evening. Ahead 1-2 in the count, Mantiply got Beltran swinging on a 79.7 MPH curveball before being lifted in favour of Brayden Heidel, who allowed one of Mantiply’s runners to score.
During Dunedin’s 9-6 win, Mantiply turned in a pitching line of 0.2 IP, 4 H, 5 R, 5 ER, 0 BB, 1 K, and threw 21 pitches (17 strikes), 11 more than the 10 he threw in his first outing.
After being signed to a minor-league deal in March, Mantiply has pitched in 17 games with the Blue Jays this season and has gone 1-0 with a 2.04 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP.
Before undergoing left-knee surgery in May, Mantiply had struck out 16 batters across 17.2 innings pitched and held opponents to a .254 average. With Mason Fluharty being the only left-hander who has a spot locked up in the bullpen, Mantiply has the opportunity to receive a shot down the stretch if he can reach the level he was pitching at pre-surgery.
