It appears that José Berríos will be able to make his next scheduled start in the Toronto Blue Jays rotation.

The right-hander was pulled from Friday’s game after being drilled in the knee by a 111.8 mile-per-hour line drive off of the bat of Tampa Bay Rays infielder Yandy Diaz. Berrios was able to throw Diaz out at first base for the final out of the fifth inning and was diagnosed with a left knee contusion.

It was an unfortunate end for Berríos as he was putting up by far the strongest start of his season thus far but it also builds optimism that he can turn things around.

Berríos went five innings against the Rays and surrendered just one earned run on four hits and no walks while striking out six. He picked up his first win of the season as the Blue Jays defeated the Rays by a score of 6-3 and his ERA dropped from 11.17 to 7.98 in the process.

With the Rays rolling into town with an undefeated 13-0 record, Berríos set the tone with a dominant three-up, three-down inning that included strikeouts of Brandon Lowe and Randy Arozarena. The only damage that Berríos allowed came in the fourth inning when Lowe singled and stole second base and Luke Raley drove him in with a single.
