The Toronto Blue Jays could soon be receiving some rotation help.
On Sunday, Blue Jays right-hander Spencer Arrighetti made his second rehab start in Triple-A with the Buffalo Bisons and first since being diagnosed with Morton’s neuroma
During the Bisons’ 9-6 win over the Worcester Red Sox, Arrighetti turned in a pitching line of 3.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, reaching 50 pitches (35 strikes) in the outing. The 26-year-old averaged 90.5 MPH with his fastball, just under two miles per hour lower than the 92.4 MPH he averaged during his 17 starts with the Houston Astros this year.
In the bottom of the first inning, Arrighetti needed 17 pitches to set Worcester down in order. The right-hander got Franklin Arias to strike out swinging on a 2-2 sinker, won a nine-pitch battle with Trevor Story by getting him to fly out to centre, and capped the inning by setting down Mikey Romero on a 75.1-MPH curveball.
After the Bisons took a 2-0 lead in the top of the second, Arrighetti put together a clinical 10-pitch bottom half of the frame to get the Bisons back into the dugout. Arrighetti induced two flyouts and a lineout to keep Worcester at bay through two innings.
Staked to a 6-0 lead entering the bottom of the third, Arrighetti once again made quick work of Worcester’s offence. This time around, the righty needed only six pitches to get Brett Harris to ground out and to retire both Jason Delay and Braiden Ward by pop-ups.
Coming back out for the bottom of the fourth with a 9-0 lead, Arrighetti once again got Arias to strikeout swinging before running into his first sign of trouble. Story worked a one-out single before Romero drove a 2-0 cutter 374 feet over the right-centre wall for his 12th home run of the season.
Romy Gonzalez followed with a single before Arrighetti issued his first walk of the afternoon after losing a six-pitch battle with Kristian Campbell. With runners on first and second with only one out, Arrighetti got Allan Castro to ground out before being replaced by C.J. Van Eyk, who immediately got Harris to fly out to close Arrighetti’s line for the afternoon.
Having thrown only 50 pitches, another start in Triple-A appears likely for Arrighetti as his last big-league action came on July 24 while still a member of the Astros. Through 17 starts this season, Arrighetti is 7-5 with a 4.60 ERA and a 1.34 WHIP.
While the Blue Jays have found success this season utilizing bullpen days, getting back to a five-man rotation for the month of September could help take some of the strain off the relievers as the club pushes for the American League’s final Wild Card spot.
