The Toronto Blue Jays now have an official diagnosis for right-hander Spencer Arrighetti’s right foot injury.
Arrighetti, who first landed on the 15-day injured list with right foot irritation on July 25, was sent for an MRI last week after departing Thursday’s Triple-A rehab start with one out in the third inning. Those results have revealed that he’s been suffering from what’s known as Morton’s neuroma, manager John Schneider announced on Monday.
“It is basically like a skin buildup around your nerve in your foot, leading it to feel like you have a rock in your shoe,” Schneider said.“We’re hoping he can pitch through it and feel better with treatment, but that’s kind of a new one for me.”
The club is still working through exactly what Arrighetti’s treatment plan will entail, though the industry’s unfamiliarity with this ailment has complicated matters a bit. But they don’t sound overly concerned that it’ll require surgery, which would be viewed as a last resort.
In the meantime, Arrighetti will remain in a holding pattern until his next steps are determined, which could include changing his cleats or inserting cushioned pads where he’s feeling discomfort. If the problem persists, they may also decide to send him for a cortisone injection to help address it.
The hope is that Arrighetti won’t be subject to an extended layoff, which would impact how many additional rehab outings he’ll need before joining the Blue Jays’ rotation. At the moment, that number likely resides at just one. However, the longer he sits idle, the higher the likelihood he’ll end up requiring multiple rehab starts.
Additionally, Schneider also provided an update on Luis Urías’s right quad strain, which will sideline him for at least “a couple of weeks” before he resumes baseball activities. That likely puts him on track to return in early September if all runs smoothly.
As for Trey Yesavage’s status, the team is still waiting to learn the results of his specialist visit to determine whether the meniscus injury to his left knee will require season-ending surgery.
