July 19 Gameday: Trey Yesavage starts as Blue Jays look for series win over White Sox

The Toronto Blue Jays are looking to make it two wins in a row when they take on the Chicago White Sox in the series finale on Sunday.

Saturday’s 1-0 win snapped a three-game losing streak and improved the Blue Jays’ record to 46-52 through 98 games. With 64 games to play, the club sits 3.5 games out of the American League’s final Wild Card spot, and is going to need to start stringing series victories together if they have any aspirations of returning to the postseason for the second straight season.

On Sunday, the Blue Jays will turn to Trey Yesavage, who is looking for a bounce-back outing of his own. Yesavage’s last start was the worst of his young career as the right-hander turned in a pitching line of 1.2 IP, 1 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 7 BB, 1 K during an 8-7 loss against the San Diego Padres on July 11.

While walks have been a concern for much of the 22-year-old’s season, his last start marked a new career high for free passes allowed in a game. The Blue Jays need Yesavage to find his control because when he’s in the zone, he’s been almost unhittable highlighted by a .182 opponents’ average.

For the season, Yesavage has made 14 starts and is 4-4 with a 3.72 ERA and a 1.16 WHIP. The right-hander has struck out 69 batters over his 75 frames but has been charged with 39 walks over that span.

Countering Yesavage for the White Sox is right-hander Sean Burke. Burke appeared in 19 games (15 starts) this season and is 6-4 with a 3.41 ERA and a 1.17 WHIP. The 26-year-old has held opponents to a .233 average, and has totalled 115 strikeouts over his 105.2 innings pitched, good for the 22nd most strikeouts in Major League Baseball.

After a strong June in which Burke went 3-1 with a 3.62 ERA, the righty has found even more success through his first two starts in July. Across 13 innings, Burke has picked up one win, allowed only two earned runs and struck out 20 batters.

Sunday’s outing will be Burke’s second against the Blue Jays this season. On April 3, during a 5-4 White Sox win, Burke entered the game behind Grant Taylor, who worked as an opener. Burke finished with a line of 6.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 7 K with the lone damage coming on an Alejandro Kirk RBI double.
