Things didn’t go well for the Toronto Blue Jays and their affiliates on Thursday.
On top of a 5-3 loss to the Houston Astros, all six of the affiliates, some in embarrassing fashion. It’s the first full organizational sweep where all six teams have lost along with the Jays this season.
Let’s see what happened in the latest Minor League Report.
Buffalo blown out
The Buffalo Bisons jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. That’s all they’d score though, as they fell 11-2 to give them a 3-7 record, the worst in the International League.
That home run was hit by, surprise, surprise, Gabriel Cancel, who hit his fifth home run in seven games since signing with the Jays. Who saw this coming? Riley Tirotta and Will Robertson each hit a double, while Alan Roden hit two singles.
Paolo Espino started the game and had a rough one, going an inning and a third and giving up three earned runs. Luis Quiñones day wasn’t much better, pitching 2.2 innings and giving up three earned runs. Erik Swanson had a solid day, striking out two in an inning and two thirds.
Yerry Rodríguez made his organizational debut, pitching two thirds of an inning with two walks and a strikeout. Eric Pardinho continues to struggle in Triple-A, giving up three earned runs and four runs total in two thirds of an inning. Troy Watson also pitched two thirds of an inning, giving up an unearned run with two walks and a strikeout.
New Hampshire gave up late runs en route to a loss
In the case of the New Hampshire Fisher Cats’ Thursday, it was close until it wasn’t. Heading into the top of the seventh, the Portland Sea Dogs had a 4-3 lead, but tacked on three runs to win 7-3. Their record now sits at 2-7, the worst in the Eastern League.
Rainer Nuñez has had a good season, and he hit his eighth home run on Thursday, as well as a single. Josh Kasevich hit his 16th double of the season and walked twice, while Devonte Brown and Michael Turconi each had a single, the latter walking twice.
Here's Rainer Nuñez's eighth home run of the season from last night.
Michael Dominguez had the start for the Fisher Cats, finishing with a line of 4.2 IP< 6 H, 2 ER, 3 BB, 5 K to bring his season to 5. Anders Tolhurst gave up two earned runs with two walks and two home runs in his inning of work, while Braydon Fisher struck out four in his inning and a third.
T.J. Brock pitched a scoreless inning with a hit and a walk allowed, but struck out the side. Jimmy Burnette was tagged with three earned runs in his inning of work.
Vancouver lost 8-1
Things didn’t go great for the Vancouver Canadians either, as they fell 8-1 to the Everett AquaSox. Their record now sits at 10-3, which is tied for the Northwest League lead with Spokane.
Juaron Watts-Brown made his High-A debut, finishing with a line of 4 IP, 6 H, 4 ER, 4 BB, 6 K. All four runs were given up in the fourth inning. Rafael Ohashi was the first out of the pen, finishing with a line of 2 IP, 3 H, 3 ER (4 R), 2 BB, 2 K, while Aaron Munson struck out and walked a batter in two innings of work.
There were two extra-base hits from the Canadians, as Jeffrey Wehler hit his fifth double of the season, while Estiven Machado hit his sixth double of the year. Wehler had a multi-hit game, as did Jackson Hornung, who hit two singles. Robert Brooks and Dasan Brown each had a single.
Dunedin’s win streak comes to an end
The Dunedin Blue Jays’ four-game winning streak came to an end Thursday, as they fell 12-3 to the Clearwater Threshers 12-3. Their record now sits at 6-6, three games behind the division lead.
Out of any affiliate on Thursday, their nine hits ranked tied for the most with the other D-Jays. Victor Arias hit his 16th double of the season, Tucker Toman hit his 11th double, Manuel Beltre hit his 13th double, and Nicolas Deschamps hit his third double. Arjun Nimmala also hit his second triple of the season. Cristian Feliz had two singles, while Edward Duran and Braden Berry each had a single.
Pitching wasn’t great for the D-Jays, though. Jorge Bautista made the start, finishing with a line of 5.1 IP, 7 H, 5 ER, 2 BB, 5 K with two homers given up. Keiner Leon gave up three earned runs in two thirds of an inning pitched, while Nate Garkow pitched a scoreless inning with a strikeout. Jordan Powell gave up four earned runs in two innings of work.
FCL Jays lost by one
Going from blowouts to low-scoring games, the Florida Complex League Jays fell 2-1 to the FCL Phillies to move to 10-33 on the season.
Brennan Orf hit a single, while Andres Sosa hit his second double at the level. Moreover, Enmanuel Bonilla and Yhoangel Aponte each walked once. That’s all the F-Jays had for offence in this game.
Ryan Watson made the start, finishing with a line of 5 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 6 K with a home run given up. Johan Simon made his season debut, striking out six in three innings of work.
DSL Jays gave up a late lead
Heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Dominican Summer League Blue Jays had a 5-1 lead, but a disastrous inning saw them lose it, falling 6-5 to the DSL Pirates Black.
They had nine hits, but didn’t do any damage as they were all singles. Juarlin Soto and Rafael Flores each had two singles. Pascual Archila, Angel Guzmán, Franklin Rojas, Yorman Licourt, and Jarold Montealto all had a single.
Silvano Hechavarría made the start, finishing with a line of 4.2 IP, 2 H, 1 ER, 4 BB, 3 K to bring his ERA to 3.86. Diego Dominguez gave up five runs – two of the earned – in his inning and a third pitched.
