The Toronto Blue Jays will be looking to avoid a fourth straight loss when they continue their series with the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday.
Los Angeles trailed 3-2 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning of the series opener Tuesday, but then exploded for six runs on Toronto’s bullpen to pull away. Yoan Moncada and Jo Adell homered in the inning to help the Angels notch their second win in the last 10 games.
Let’s dive into the odds for this series’ second game between the Blue Jays and Angels, courtesy of bet365.

About the Blue Jays (16-19 SU, 21-14 ATS, 15-20 o/u)
Another day, another bullpen implosion for the Jays. Yimi Garcia and Jeff Hoffman were both tagged for three earned runs in the eighth-inning meltdown, with the latter surrendering both homers in the inning. It was the first tough outing of the season for the usually reliable Hoffman, who has been by far Toronto’s best reliever to this point. Garcia has now had back-to-back meltdowns, though, allowing seven earned runs across his last two appearances. Toronto’s bullpen has converted just 10 of its 17 save chances and now owns a bloated 4.21 ERA, which ranks 19th in the majors.
If you want to draw a positive from Tuesday’s collapse, it’s that the power-challenged Blue Jays managed to launch a pair of homers courtesy of George Springer and Anthony Santander. They now have 25 total bombs on the season, which still ranks last in the majors.
About the Angels (14-20, 13-21 ATS, 18-15-1 o/u)
The Angels hadn’t scored more than five runs in a game in over three weeks, but then exploded for six in the eighth inning alone on Tuesday. They scored more runs in that inning than they had in a game since April 10th. Taylor Ward launched his seventh homer of the campaign in the victory, one of three long balls on the day for the Angels, who rank fifth in the majors with 47 home runs this season despite an awful .216/.271/.386 team slash line.
Bettors may have been wondering why Kenley Jansen didn’t appear in a close game Tuesday night, but it was revealed after the game that he was dealing with an illness. The Angels are hopeful he’ll be available on Wednesday should a save opportunity present itself.
Probable starting pitchers
Toronto: RHP Jose Berrios (1-1, 3.98 ERA, 7.97 K/9)
Berrios allowed two runs on seven hits while striking out eight over 6 2/3 innings of work last time out versus the Boston Red Sox. He’s been solid for the Blue Jays this season, outside any start that he makes against the Baltimore Orioles, who have his number this year. Pretty much all of his Statcast metrics rank below league average this season, but he was terrific in his lone start against the Angels last year, holding them to a single run over seven innings of work.
Los Angeles: LHP Yusei Kikuchi (0-4, 4.21 ERA, 8.17 K/9)
This is a classic revenge spot for Kikuchi against his former team after he signed a three-year deal with the Angels in the offseason.
He’s still looking for his first win of the season, as he’s received an average of just 2.9 runs of support per game in his outings. The southpaw’s fastball is averaging 94.4 mph this season, an average drop of 1.1 mph from last season, and it’s made a big difference as opposing batters are hitting .348 off the pitch this year. The 33-year-old has a 4.98 Expected ERA, but he’s pitched well at Angel Stadium, compiling a 1.74 ERA across two home starts.
Notable injuries
Anthony Rendon (hip) and outfielder Mike Trout (knee) are on the injured list for the Angels.
As for the Blue Jays, pitchers Ryan Burr (shoulder), Erik Swanson (forearm), Nick Sandlin (lat), and Max Scherzer (thumb) are all on the injured list.
Weather
It should be a pleasant evening for baseball in Anaheim, with temperatures expected around 18 C under clear skies. Winds will be light out to centre field at 8 mph.
Blue Jays vs. Angels betting trends
- The over is 6-1 in the Angels’ last seven games.
- The Blue Jays are 9-2 in the past 11 meetings with the Angels.
- The Blue Jays have hit the team total under in 12 of their 16 road games.
Blue Jays vs. Angels player prop trends
- Vladimir Guerrero Jr. has hit safely in eight straight games and is a steep -310 to extend that streak.
- Angels infielder Zach Neto is taking an 11-game hitting streak into action Wednesday and is -205 to extend that streak.
- Kikuchi’s strikeout line is set low Wednesday at 4.5, a number he’s beaten in six of his seven appearances this season while averaging 4.7 per game with a median of 5 per game. He’s -102 to record over 4.5 strikeouts against his former team.
Blue Jays vs. Angels best bet
- Kikuchi over 4.5 strikeouts: -102 for one unit (best odds @ PROLINE +). This line seems low given that Kikuchi has bested this mark in six of his seven starts this year and 18 of his last 20 dating back to last season. Add in the revenge factor against his former squad, and you have to think Kikuchi will be plenty motivated to have a fine showing and rack up plenty of strikeouts against the Blue Jays in this spot. Toronto does an excellent job of limiting strikeouts (255 through 35 games, second-fewest in the majors), but another southpaw, Tyler Anderson, was able to rack up seven on them Tuesday night. Most online projection models have Kikuchi recording around six strikeouts on Wednesday.
