The wait is almost over.

According to Jamie Campbell, the Blue Jays are planning to start Nate Pearson on Wednesday in Washington against the Nationals.

We always knew that Pearson would make his Major League debut at some point this season, the question was simply when it would happen. Pearson’s service time will have been adequately manipulated by Wednesday, so the Blue Jays will gain an extra year of control before he can hit free agency well down the road.

Adding Pearson to the rotation should be a huge boost for the team. Though we should always keep our expectations for rookies at a realistic level, Pearson was absolutely dominant in spring training and realistically could hit the ground running and immediately become a top-of-the-rotation option for the Blue Jays.

Also, having Pearson in the rotation (along with Hyun Jin Ryu, Matt Shoemaker, Trent Thornton, and Tanner Roark) will allow the Jays to use Thomas Hatch and/or Anthony Kay as a reliever, which will give Charlie Montoyo some much-needed depth out of the ‘pen.

Pearson is currently on the team’s Taxi Squad and isn’t on the 40-man roster, so the Jays will have to make some moves ahead of his planned start on Wednesday.
