The wait is finally over for the New York Mets’ top pitching prospect. Canadian right-hander Jonah Tong will be called up to the big leagues, according to Mets manager Carlos Mendoza. He is slated to make his Major League debut on Friday against the Miami Marlins.
The Mets are moving to a six-man rotation to manage an upcoming 16-game stretch, and Tong was the most deserving candidate for the call-up. Ranked as the Mets’ No. 4 prospect and No. 44 overall on MLB’s Top 100 prospects list, Tong has earned every step of his rapid ascent. He follows fellow Canuck and Cubs outfielder Owen Caissie as a recent graduate from the farm system.
Drafted by the Mets in the seventh round of the 2022 MLB Draft, Tong has quickly risen through the Mets system, excelling at every level. After just three seasons in the minors, he has proven himself as the organization’s most prepared young arm.
In 2025, Tong began the year in Double-A Binghamton, where he dominated the Eastern League with a 1.59 ERA across 102 innings, going 8–5 while leading the league with 162 strikeouts. His performance earned a promotion to Triple-A, where he continued his dominance with a 1.58 ERA over 11 2/3 innings in two starts.
Overall, Tong has compiled a 10–5 record, a 1.43 ERA, 179 strikeouts, and 47 walks, numbers that left little doubt he was ready for the big leagues. He currently leads all qualified minor league pitchers in ERA and punchouts.
Born in Markham, Ontario—also the hometown of former Blue Jays closer and current Phillies reliever Jordan Romano—Tong grew up playing with the Toronto Mets in the Canadian Premier Baseball League and represented Canada on the Junior National Team. He also impressed scouts at the Canadian Futures Showcase (formerly Tournament 12), in the MLB Draft League, and with the Georgia Premier Academy; performances that helped raise his draft stock.
Now, after years of development and steady progression, Tong’s dominance has outgrown the minor leagues. His debut with the Mets marks the beginning of what could be a major chapter for both his career and the franchise.
