Luis Urias is heading down south for the winter, but it’s not for vacation purposes.
The Magdalena de Kino product is suiting up for Yaquis de Obregon as part of the Mexican Pacific Winter League. Urias was acquired by the Toronto Blue Jays on June 20th from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for cash consideration.
He was playing on the Diamondbacks Triple-A team at the time of the deal, and the infielder would suit up in 26 for the Jays down the stretch. Through 52 at-bats, he collected three doubles, three home runs, and eight RBIs with six walks and a .803 OPS. This small sample size amounted to a .250/.322/.481 slash line while playing second base for Toronto.
Urias landed on the IL in early August with a right quad strain and remained in the minor leagues on rehab assignments through the rest of the season. Urias will be heading to free agency this winter, and is still listed on the Jays roster until the completion of the World Series and the pending days following for free agency moves, barring an extension between the two sides.
The 29-year-old is no stranger to playing winter ball in Mexico, and has suited up for Obregon across four different seasons heading into the 2026/2027 campaign. Urias last played for the organization in 2023/2024, appearing in 24 games.
A host of other former Jays are also playing winter ball.
Former right-hander Leam Mendez, who was released in 2024, is playing for Jaguares de Nayarit this winter. Veteran outfielder Mallex Smith, who was traded and signed an MiLB deal with the Jays back in 2021/2022, is a member of Caneros de los Mochis for the season.
LHP Jimmy Burnette (Naranjeros de Hermosillo), C Andres Sosa (Naranjeros de Hermosillo), and former top prospect Jordan Groshans (Jaguares de Nayarit) are also spending the winter down in Mexico. Groshans spent the 2026 season in the Atlanta Braves farm system on a MiLB deal.
