The Toronto Blue Jays have picked up some more infield depth.
Following Saturday afternoon’s victory against the Chicago Cubs, they sent cash considerations to the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for infielder Luis Urías, according to The Athletic’s Mitch Bannon.
Additionally, Urías is expected to join not just the Blue Jays 40-man roster, but also their 26-man roster in the coming days. The corresponding move has yet to be announced, but the Blue Jays are getting a right-handed utility infielder with big league experience.
Expectation is Urias will join the Blue Jays’ major-league team after exercising an upward mobility clause
Per source, Blue Jays have acquired utility INF Luis Urias from the Arizona Diamondbacks for cash considerations. @baseball_lib and @MitchBannon were on it. RHH Urias has played parts of eight seasons with five MLB clubs. Career .231/.329/.378 hitter. Low chase rates throughout.
So far in 2026, Urías has spent the entirety of 2026 in the Diamondbacks minor leagues, particularly their Triple-A team. He’s slashing .361/.393/.546 with three home runs in 117 plate appearances. Urías has big league experience, spending time in the big leagues in each of the last eight seasons.
His best came back in 2021, where he slashed .249/.345/.445 with 23 home runs in 570 plate appearances with the Milwaukee Brewers. The following season, Urías hit 16 home runs in 472 plate appearances, the two times in his career he’s hit double-digit long balls.
Urías has played sporadically in the past three seasons, registering 177 plate appearances in 2023, just 109 in 2024, and 330 in 2025, when he slashed .230/.315/.338 with eight home runs for an 84 wRC+.
A right-handed batter, Urías has had better success off left-handed pitching in his career. Over his 548 plate appearances against southpaws, the 29-year-old is slashing .254/.336/.417 with 18 home runs for a 109 wRC+. That’s compared to 1,532 plate appearances against righties, where he’s slashing .223/.326/.364 with 42 home runs for his career.
While not as good as, say, Andrés Giménez or Ernie Clement defensively, Urías has proven to be an adequate fielder, more so at the hot corner. Since breaking into the big leagues, Urías has 11 Defensive Runs Saved, -6 Outs Above Average, and -7 Fielding Run Value in 1,616.2 innings at third.
He’s not terrible at second, posting -1 DRS, -4 OAA, and -2 FRV in 1,792 innings fielded at the keystone. At shortstop, Urías had -7 DRS, -15 OAA, and -14 FRV in 1,116. He unsurprisingly hasn’t played shortstop since 2022.
We’ll see what the move is to get Urías on not just the 26-man roster, but also the 40-man roster. One has to figure he’ll be in the lineup against left-handed pitcher, potentially in place of Giménez.
