Report: Jays sign international prospect Rikelvin De Castro

Jul 2, 2019, 10:24 EDT
The Toronto Blue Jays will reportedly make a signing as international free agency opens this morning, agreeing to a $1.2-million deal with shortstop prospect Rikelvin De Castro.
The 16-year-old infielder is ranked at 27 in MLB Pipeline’s Top 30 international free agents.
The Blue Jays and De Castro have been linked as early as February of this year, when Baseball America reported that Toronto was the heavy favourite to sign the shortstop.
They had this to say about the player:
A lean, 6-foot shortstop, de Castro is a high-energy, hard-nosed player with a chance to develop into a plus defender, making challenging plays look easy. He’s a righthanded hitter with a quick, loose stroke and gap power. Castro trains with Angel Perez and is expected with the Blue Jays, likely for north of $1 million.
According to BA as well, the Jays have already signed the following players with their international free agent pool:
Estiven Machado, SS, Venezuela
Robert Robertis, OF, Venezuela
Cesar Ayala, RHP, Venezuela
Victor Mesia, C, Venezuela
Cristian Feliz, OF, Dominican Republic
