On Tuesday, prior to the Toronto Blue Jays taking on the New York Yankees in the second game of their four-game series, the Blue Jays placed Joe Mantiply on the 15-day injured list with left knee inflammation.
Mantiply, who was signed to a minor-league contract with an invitation to spring training on March 3, has become a strong piece of the Blue Jays’ bullpen to this point in 2026. The left-hander has appeared in 17 games and has posted a 1-0 record, a 2.04 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP.
After being called up to the Blue Jays on April 5, Mantiply has settled in to strike out 16 batters over his 17 1/3 frames. In his second outing with the club, the 35-year-old allowed three earned runs to the Los Angeles Dodgers, but since that game on April 6, Mantiply has only allowed one earned run over his next 15 2/3 innings.
The month of May has been strong for the 27th round draft pick in 2013, tossing six scoreless frames, and allowing opposing teams to only hit .200, well below his career average against of .270.
With Mantiply going to the IL, that leaves Blue Jays manager John Schneider with only Mason Fluharty and Adam Macko as left-handed arms in the bullpen.
Fluharty has pitched to a 4.96 ERA this season, but has looked strong of late, not allowing a run in his past seven outings. Macko made his MLB debut on Monday night and tossed a scoreless frame, retiring both J.C. Escarra and Paul Goldschmidt on groundouts to first base before getting Ben Rice to line out to right field.
In a corresponding move, right-hander Chase Lee was recalled from Triple-A Buffalo. Lee is up for his second stint with the Blue Jays after appearing in one game with the club on April 27 during a 5-0 loss against the Boston Red Sox. The 27-year-old threw 1 1/3 innings, allowing a solo home run to Red Sox catcher Carlos Narváez, and struck out Ceddanne Rafaela in his lone appearance.
Lee was acquired from the Detroit Tigers on December 12, 2025, in exchange for pitching prospect Johan Simon, and has put together a strong start to the year with the Bisons.
Across 15 games with Buffalo, Lee is 0-1 with a 1.83 ERA, a 1.37 WHIP, and has picked up three saves in three opportunities over his 19 2/3 innings.
