The Toronto Blue Jays retained some of their pitching depth on Monday.
Francys Romero is reporting that Lazaro Estrada, who was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays on Saturday, cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Buffalo.
Estrada was DFA’d before Saturday’s 4-1 victory over the New York Yankees to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for outfielder Daz Cameron.
Through eight games this season with the Blue Jays, Estrada is 1-1 with a 5.54 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP. The 27-year-old has walked 10, struck out nine and held opponents to a .178 average across his 13 innings this season.
Estrada has been a part of the Blue Jays’ ever-changing bullpen this season. Since the calendar flipped to July, the right-hander has been recalled on four separate occasions. During the Blue Jays’ series in Philadelphia, Estrada was used in all three games and picked up a win, a save and a loss, as the Blue Jays dealt with an overworked bullpen.
Estrada has spent his entire professional career in the Blue Jays’ organization, and across 10 MLB games, he is 1-1 with a 6.64 ERA and 1.43 WHIP across 20.1 innings pitched. Due to his ability to pitch multiple innings, Estrada is a likely candidate to return to the big-league roster if arms get thin over the final 36 games.
In 10 games (three starts) with the Bisons this season, Estrada is 3-0 with a 2.52 ERA and a 0.88 WHIP. Estrada has struck out 25 batters across 25 innings and has held opponents to a .163 average.
