The Toronto Blue Jays are adding some Indy ball depth to their farm system.

Per the Sussex County Miners, an Independent baseball team in the Frontier League, the Blue Jays have purchased the contract of right-hander Blake Purnell from their squad.

Purnell made one start for the Miners this season, allowing three runs on seven hits over 4 1/3 innings against the Down East Bird Dawgs. He also struck out two while allowing three walks in his lone outing, tossing a 64.1% strike rate across 78 pitches.

The 23-year-old stands at 6-foot-3 and spent his collegiate career at the University of Florida, posting a 5.42 ERA across 74 relief outings for the Gators. Across the 91 1/3 innings, he amassed a 1.544 WHIP with a 3.7 BB/9 and a 7.7 K/9.

Following his time on the college circuit, Purnell made seven appearances in the MLB Draft league, appearing in seven games with a 1.13 ERA across eight innings, before finishing the calendar year with the Milwaukee Milkmen in the American Association.

Across 47 total outings spread across the 2024 and 2025 seasons, including one postseason appearance last year, Purnell posted a 4.88 ERA with 81 hits, 27 walks, and 65 strikeouts across 72 innings of work.

The signing is not official on the MiLB transaction log, so it remains to be seen where Purnell is going to be playing within the Jays organization.
