The Toronto Blue Jays retained some outfield depth on Thursday morning.
Ari Alexander from 7News Boston is reporting that the Blue Jays re-signed Rudy Martin Jr. to a minor-league contract with an invitation to big-league camp.
On October 30, the Blue Jays announced that Martin had cleared waivers and had been assigned to Triple-A Buffalo, which meant the outfielder had been removed from the 40-man roster.
Following that move, Martin elected free agency on November 2 before opting to return to the Blue Jays’ organization. Martin made his Major League Baseball debut this season with the Blue Jays after spending nine seasons in the minor leagues. Across two games, he went 0-for-2 with a walk.
Martin’s path to the majors has been anything but direct. Martin was drafted in the 25th round during the 2014 MLB draft by the Kansas City Royals, but had to wait until September 11, 2026, to have his contract selected to an MLB roster.
Unfortunately for Martin, three days after his MLB debut, he was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain, an ailment that ultimately cost the 30-year-old the remainder of the 2026 campaign.
During the 2026 season, Martin spent time in the Royals, Baltimore Orioles, and Blue Jays organizations. Martin appeared with both the Double-A and Triple-A affiliates of the Royals before being traded to the Orioles on July 18 for cash considerations.
Martin was assigned to Triple-A Norfolk, but lasted only two days before being designated for assignment on July 20. Three days later, the Blue Jays claimed Martin off waivers and optioned him to Buffalo.
In 27 games with the Bisons, Martin batted .253 with three home runs and 11 RBIs. Martin reached base at a .351 clip and stole 12 bases in 13 attempts, so his ticket back to the majors would be by utilizing his legs.
