Transaction season has begun.
On Friday afternoon, the Toronto Blue Jays announced that Rudy Martin Jr. has cleared waivers and has been assigned to Triple-A, meaning he is now off the 40-man roster.
Martin Jr. was acquired by the Blue Jays in mid-July from the Baltimore Orioles, as he was designated for assignment by the fellow American League East team. After spending years in the minor leagues and independent leagues, Martin Jr. was called up on September 11th and appeared in two games with the Jays.
The first was on the day he was called up, serving as a pinch runner. Martin Jr. received his first start the following days, going 0-3 with a walk and a strikeout in three plate appearances. Unfortunately, his season came to an end after that, as the Blue Jays placed Martin Jr. on the 10-day injured list with a left hamstring strain.
It’s been a long journey since Martin Jr. was drafted in the 25th round all the way back in 2014 by the Kansas City Royals. He spent parts of seven seasons in the Royals organization before electing free agency and joining the Washington Nationals organization for the 2022 season.
Martin Jr. didn’t appear in another minor league game until 2025, as he played in the independent leagues in 2023 and 2024, before starting the 2025 season in Mexico. But in May 2025, he rejoined the Royals’ organization, spending parts of two seasons there before being traded to the Orioles five days before the Jays picked him up on waivers.
Hopefully, Martin Jr. can find his way back to the big leagues in the future.
Expect more transactions over the coming days. Thursday marked the beginning of the off-season, as teams are able to make trades yet again. On November 2nd, free agency officially begins at 5:00 PM ET. It’ll be a busy month with the looming lockout.
