The Toronto Blue Jays have added another arm to their organization.
On Thursday, before the series finale against the Kansas City Royals, Sportsnet’s Shi Davidi reported that the Blue Jays signed right-hander Michael Lorenzen.
Lorenzen was designated for assignment by the Colorado Rockies on August 17 and released by the club two days later. In 26 appearances (25 starts) this season, Lorenzen is 3-11 with a 7.08 ERA and a 1.88 WHIP. The 34-year-old has struck out 88 batters across 115.2 innings pitched and has had opponents hit .338 off him during that span.
Originally signed by the Rockies to a one-year, $8-million contract in January, the righty failed to show the form he displayed during the 2025 season when he went 7-11 with a 4.64 ERA and 1.33 WHIP across 27 outings with the Royals.
The Blue Jays will be on the hook for a pro-rated portion of the major-league minimum while the Rockies will be paying the remainder of Lorenzen’s $8-million salary.
Over parts of 12 seasons, with seven teams, Lorenzen has appeared in 421 games (144 starts) and is 57-66 with a 4.40 ERA and a 1.37 WHIP. Lorenzen has struck out 908 batters over his 1,111.2 innings and been hit at a .256 clip.
To make room for Lorenzen on both the 40-man roster and active roster, Chad Dallas was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo and Jonatan Clase was transferred to the 60-day injured list.
Dallas picked up the victory during Wednesday night’s 3-0 win over the Royals after tossing 2.2 scoreless frames. Through four outings with the Blue Jays this season, Dallas is 2-1 with a 6.10 ERA and a 1.55 WHIP.
The right-hander has struck out 10 batters across his 10.1 innings pitched and held opponents to a .250 average. A fourth-round pick of the Blue Jays in 2021, Dallas made his MLB debut this season and figures to keep getting looks in an ever-changing Blue Jays bullpen.
Clase heads to the 60-day IL as he continues to deal with left plantar fasciitis. Clase was placed on the 10-day IL on July 22 after appearing in nine games with the Blue Jays this season.
Through his nine games, Clase is batting .273 with two home runs and six RBIs. The 24-year-old reached base at a .360 clip during his time in the big leagues this season.
