A few hours before first pitch against the Tampa Bay Rays, the Toronto Blue Jays announced a pair of roster moves on Wednesday, recalling outfielder Yohendrick Piñango and right-hander CJ Van Eyk from Triple-A Buffalo.

Piñango’s return comes as fellow outfielder Jonatan Clase was placed on the 10-day injured list with “left plantar fasciitis,” retroactive to July 21. That IL placement permitted Van Eyk’s call-up, which, by rule, wouldn’t have been allowed otherwise as he hadn’t spent 15 days in the minors yet after being optioned on Saturday.

To make room for Van Eyk in the bullpen, fellow righty Lazaro Estrada was sent back to Triple-A after throwing 41 pitches in Tuesday’s 12-2 loss to the Rays. Both he and Piñango — who’s starting in left field and batting fifth — will be active for Wednesday’s contest.

Clase was a late scratch from Tuesday’s lineup moments before first pitch, replaced by Myles Straw in left field and in the No. 9 spot in the batting order. According to manager John Schneider, the 24-year-old — who’s dealt with a history of plantar fasciitis-related issues — had it flare up on him while running on the field during pre-game warm-ups and was in “a lot of pain” before being substituted.

The switch-hitting outfielder has played in nine games with the Blue Jays this season, going 6-for-22 with a pair of home runs and six RBIs, registering three walks and eight strikeouts. He’ll be out of minor-league options entering next season.

There have been a handful of bright offensive moments during Piñango’s rookie campaign in Toronto, highlighted by his five home runs and 20 RBIs in 51 games thus far. The left-handed-hitting outfielder also enters Wednesday’s contest with a .267/.313/.413 slash line and a 103 wRC+.

Van Eyk, optioned after throwing two scoreless innings in his major-league debut against the Chicago White Sox last week, offers a fresh arm capable of providing length out of the ‘pen. He’ll serve as another bulk option alongside Spencer Miles, who’s expected to follow opener Braydon Fisher versus the Rays.
