Series Preview: Blue Jays head to Houston on Deadline Day for a three-game set

The trade deadline has officially arrived, and the Toronto Blue Jays are active.
After dropping the final game of their series at home against the St. Louis Cardinals 5-1, the team has begun its retooling by sending Kevin Gausman to the Chicago Cubs and acquiring José Soriano from the Los Angeles Angels.
Gausman made his final start as a Blue Jay on Saturday afternoon and picked up a win, tossing 5.2 innings, striking out four, and allowing just one earned run before exiting to a stadium-wide ovation as he tapped his chest in appreciation for the fans. Though he was unable to finish out his five-year contract with the Blue Jays, Gausman will go down as one of the best free-agent signings in franchise history, leading the charge at the top of the rotation in last year’s postseason run. 
On the other hand, Soriano is a controllable arm that replaces Gausman in the current iteration of the Jays’ rotation and is under contract through the 2028 season. He had an unbelievable first six starts of the season, posting a 0.24 ERA, and though he has come back down to earth, he possesses great upside with a hard sinker/knuckle-curve combo that induces lots of ground balls.
It is unknown what else the Blue Jays will do before the 6 p.m. EST trade deadline Monday afternoon, with George Springer, Daulton Varsho, and Shane Bieber all on expiring contracts. They’ve already traded away their former No. 2 overall prospect, Arjun Nimmala, to the Angels for Soriano, indicating they aren’t afraid to part with young talent to acquire ready-now MLB players.
As for where the team stands after a series win against the Cardinals, they are now 52-60, still good for last in the AL East and 4.5 games back of a Wild Card spot. Even though that number seems attainable to grab the final Wild Card spot, the Jays would need to surpass six teams and show an ability to provide consistent offence over the next two months. 
The team ranks second-last in terms of OPS (.682) across MLB, and third-last in terms of WRC+ (93). In July,  Springer hit .290 with an .878 OPS and four home runs, and was the only bat with at least 50 plate appearances in the month to record an OPS above .760. Should Springer be traded at the deadline, the team will have a tough time scoring runs down the stretch.
The pitching staff improved in July after a horrific month of June, posting a 3.60 FIP, good for fifth in MLB. The starting staff produced the sixth-highest FanGraphs WAR across the league, thanks in large part to Dylan Cease winning American League pitcher of the month, going 3-1 with a 1.00 ERA and 46 strikeouts across 36 innings pitched.

Examining the Houston Astros

The Houston Astros are in a murky situation, currently in first place in the American League West Division, three games over .500 with a 58-55 record, though they hold the top spot largely due to the Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers struggling to break away in a relatively weak division. 
The Astros are heating up just at the right time, going 9-1 in their last 10 games and currently on a six-game winning streak, though no signs have pointed towards their direction at the deadline. Seattle and Texas have both been active thus far, though Houston may feel as though their roster is good enough to compete as is, given the weak play from its opponents.
As a team, the Astros are slashing .245/.321/.418/.739, with a 107 WRC+, good for fourth in MLB. They sit right in the middle of the pack at 16th with an 8.8% walk rate, and strike out at the 12th-lowest clip in the league at a 21.6% mark. They rank third in Major League Baseball with 155 home runs, with Yordan Alvarez and Jeremy Pena doing a lot of the heavy lifting, being the only two regular batters to have an OPS over .800. 
Though they have their weaknesses offensively, the Astros without a doubt have struggled much more in the pitching department this season. Their starting staff ranks fifth-worst in the league in terms of ERA at a 4.66 mark, and their FIP is even worse at 4.74, also good for fifth-worst. 
They have big-time walk issues, having generated a 4.59 BB/9 to this point, which is the worst in all of MLB. Their K/9 sits at a respectable 8.86 mark, good for ninth-best in the league. They’ve also given up home runs at an alarming rate, with a 1.41 HR/9, good for fifth-worst in the league. 
The bullpen has been shaky at times but overall more consistent than the starting staff, holding a 4.10 ERA, good for 16th across the league. Their FIP of 4.46 ranks seventh-worst in the league, and they walk batters at the 12th-highest rate in the big leagues, at a 3.98 mark. Their lone bright spot is their K/9, which ranks ninth-best in the league at a 9.03 mark, with a 1.31 HR/9 good for sixth-worst in MLB. 

One player to watch: Yordan Alvarez

With Aaron Judge missing the majority of the 2026 season, Alvarez has a real chance to win the American League MVP, even though he is a primary designated hitter. He has the potential to win the triple-crown across the entire league, currently leading all batters with a .330 average and 35 home runs, to pair with 84 RBIs, which ranks second behind CJ Abrams (85) for the league lead.
An injury-plagued season a year ago limited Alvarez to just 48 games played and the lowest OPS of his career (.797), and in a bounce-back campaign, he has posted arguably the best numbers of his entire career, already sitting just two home runs shy of his career-best 37 mark back in 2022, with 49 games left in the regular season. Overall, he is slashing .330/.442/.650/1.092, with a 196 WRC+, all of which lead MLB. 
He ranks in the 100th percentile for xwOBA, xBA, xSLG and Batting Run Value, while being above the 95th percentile for Avg Exit Velo, Barrel%, Hard-Hit%, LA Sweet-Spot% and BB%. At 6-foot-4 and 237 lb, Alvarez is a freak of nature at the plate and argues to be the best pure hitter in the sport. 

Quick Hits

  • The Blue Jays have now acquired two starting pitchers in Soriano and Jameson Taillon to fill out their rotation for the rest of the season and beyond, given they’ve traded away Gausman and are likely to deal away Bieber, who is on an expiring contract.
  • With exactly 50 games left on the calendar for the Blue Jays, the Jays would need to go 30-20 to finish above .500 at an 82-80 record. FanGraphs currently projects the final Wild Card team to finish with 82 wins, giving the Jays at least a slim chance of entering the postseason, should they go on a run late.
  • Gausman, shortly after being traded to the Cubs, may soon face his former team on Thursday afternoon, as the Jays head to Chicago to play a make-up game from Father’s Day back in June when the final of a three-game set got rained out. There is also a possibility that former Cub Taillon gets the ball for the Blue Jays in that game.
  • The Jays traded Adam Macko to the Rangers in exchange for Josh Smith and Josh Stephan, adding to their infield depth with a super-utility piece in Smith who can play nearly every position on the diamond. In order to free up space, another move will likely be made later today to add Smith to the active 26-man roster.
  • Cease will pitch in a rematch against Hunter Brown in the final game of the series, outduelling the Astros ace last time the two faced each other on June 22 at the Rogers Centre, with Cease going 5.2 innings, allowing two runs, to pair with eight strikeouts.
