One of the Toronto Blue Jays’ top prospects is moving up a level.
On Saturday evening, MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo reported the Blue Jays promoted shortstop Arjun Nimmala to the Double-A New Hampshire Fisher Cats.
The shortstop repeated the High-A level to begin the 2026 season. With the Vancouver Canadians, Nimmala is slashing .241/.362/.845 with four home runs and nine doubles in 105 plate appearances. The 20-year-old has also walked 15.2% of the time while posting a respectable strikeout rate of 22.9%.
Nimmala got off to a slow start, slashing just .132/.298/.289 with one home run in his first 47 plate appearances. Since April 18th, the shortstop has hit three home runs and six doubles for a .327/.414/.633 slash line. But it’s not the first time Nimmala has had a slow start to the season.
He was drafted 20th overall in the 2023 draft and is widely considered a top 100 prospect. Nimmala got a cup of tea as a professional following the draft, but his first full professional season was in 2024. The Blue Jays were aggressive with the then 18-year-old, placing him in Single-A.
From the start of the season until May 12th, 2024, the shortstop slashed .167/.280/.306 with three home runs in 125 plate appearances. Not only that, but Nimmala had an incredibly high 34.4 K%. He was placed on the development list for a few weeks, then joined the Florida Complex League Blue on June 3rd.
When he returned to action, Nimmala looked like a brand new player. From June 3rd until the end of the season, Nimmala slashed ..263/.346/.565 with 14 home runs in 266 plate appearances split between the FCL and Single-A. Even with the strong end to his season, Nimmala’s 28.9 K% was slightly concerning, and something he’d have to address in 2025.
Again, the Blue Jays were aggressive with Nimmala, placing the then 19-year-old in High-A. The start of his 2025 season was the inverse of the year prior, with Nimmala slashing .289/.372/.528 with nine home runs in his first 207 plate appearances.
From the start of June until the end of the 2025 season, Nimmala slashed just .184/.277/.290 with four home runs in 336 plate appearances. The silver lining from this season was that Nimmala’s K% plummeted to 21.4%, a positive sign.
Although the Blue Jays weren’t immediately aggressive with Nimmala’s placement to begin this season, this is a huge step for the 20-year-old. So far this season, only five players who’ll be 20 or younger have received a plate appearance at the Double-A level. There are also three 20-year-old’s to receive a plate appearance in Triple-A.
Of those eight players, five are on MLB Pipeline’s Top 100 list, ranking no lower than 26th. Four of them are considered top 10 prospects: Konnor Griffin (now in the big leagues), Colt Emerson, Leo De Vries, and Jesús Made. We’ll see Nimmala does when he arrives with the Fisher Cats.
