Toronto Blue Jays prospect Arjun Nimmala is starting to heat up.
After registering at least a hit in four of the Vancouver Canadians’ first five games, Nimmala went hitless for five consecutive games. He got off the schneid on Saturday, hitting his second home run of his season, his first since the C’s Opening Day. Well, he hit another one on Sunday, as the Canadians beat Spokane 5-2 to take the series.
It’s been a mixed bag type of season for the shortstop prospect. Over the course of 12 games, the 20-year-old has six extra-base hits, three home runs and three doubles. However, he’s slashing just .208/.333/.458 for a 118 wRC+. Nimmala has done a good job of drawing walks (14 BB%), but his K% has elevated to 24.6%. His three hits in Sunday’s game is a good step forward.
There were a few other notes from that game as well. Tucker Toman hit his second double of the season, en route to winning the Northwest League’s Player of the Week. Peyton Williams was promoted to the C’s, drawing three walks in five plate appearances. Alexis Hernandez also hit a double, while J.R. Freethy, Dub Gleed, and Hayden Gilliland hit singles.
Austin Cates made the start for the C’s, going five innings with three strikeouts and an earned run allowed to bring his season ERA to 3.95. Carson Pierce pitched two scoreless innings, giving him a 2.25 ERA. Jay Schueler gave up an earned run in his inning of work, but he still has a spectacular 1.35 ERA. Eminen Flores’ ERA is even better after his scoreless inning for the save, sitting at 1.08.
Other notes from Sunday’s games…
The New Hampshire Fisher Cats’ game was canceled, so there were just two other games on tap. In Single-A action, the Dunedin Blue Jays fell 3-2 to the Clearwater Threshers, while the Buffalo Bisons fell 6-4 to the Rochester Red Wings.
JoJo Parker has a 12-game on base streak thanks to two singles in the D-Jays game. All six of the team’s hits were singles, with Blaine Bullard, Eric Snow, Aldo Gaxiola, and Juan Sanchez notching the other four. Sanchez drove in Parker with his single, his first career Single-A RBI.

Brandon Barriera made the start, going two and one-thirds innings pitched with one earned run, four walks, and two strikeouts. Luis Victorino struck out three in an inning and a third, and Canadian Aiden Taggart struck out two in a scoreless inning.
The Bisons had 10 hits, with half of them being doubles. Je’Von Ward hit two, while Adam Hackenberg, Carlos Mendoza, and Rafael Lantigua hit the other three. Josh Rivera, Ward, and Mendoza each had a two-hit day.
Josh Fleming made the start, giving up three earned runs in three and two-third innings. Brendon Little struck out three and gave up an unearned run, and Devereaux Harrison struck out four in two clean innings.
This week, the Bisons host the Columbus Clippers. The Fisher Cats hit the road to take on the Reading Fightin Phils and the C’s return to Vancouver to host the Tri-City Dust Devils. Lastly, the D-Jays hit the road to take on the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels.
