During the 2026 MLB Draft, the Toronto Blue Jays took a pitcher-heavy approach, selecting nine arms to hopefully one day help their organization.
Following the draft, the Blue Jays set their sights toward the undrafted free-agent pool and added four more pitchers with two of them being Reese Bassinger and Gavin Seebold.
Both Bassinger and Seebold were assigned to Single-A Dunedin to begin their professional careers and to this point with the Dunedin Blue Jays, the results have been nothing short of impressive.
Reese Bassinger
Bassinger signed with the Blue Jays after spending three seasons in the NCAA, with his final two coming at West Virginia University. In his senior season, Bassinger pitched in 31 games with the Mountaineers and went 4-3 with a 3.30 ERA and a 1.18 WHIP. The right-hander totalled 64 strikeouts across his 60 innings.
Officially assigned to Dunedin on July 28, the club wasted no time giving Bassinger his first taste of game-action at the professional level. Pitching that night, Bassinger worked a clean frame and required only 12 pitches to record two strikeouts and retire the side in order.
For the season, Bassinger has pitched in six games with Dunedin and has posted a 1.13 ERA and 0.63 WHIP across his first eight innings pitched. The 23-year-old picked up his first career save on August 19 after throwing two scoreless innings during Dunedin’s 4-2 win over the Clearwater Threshers.
Bassinger has struck out eight batters over his eight frames with only one walk and held opponents to a paltry .138 average, with the lone run being a solo home run given up on August 15.
Gavin Seebold
Seebold was signed by the Blue Jays after spending four seasons in the NCAA at both Southern Indiana and Indiana University. In his final season with the Hoosiers, Seebold pitched in 17 games and went 2-4 with a 4.67 ERA and a 1.49 WHIP. Across 44.1 innings pitched, Seebold struck out 56 and displayed an ability to miss bats.
Assigned to Dunedin on the same day as Bassinger, Seebold had to wait until July 30 to enter into his first game with Dunedin. Seebold was tested in a high-leverage situation right away, as he was thrown into a save situation. Seebold passed the test by tossing a shutout frame on 11 pitches with one strikeout to record his first career professional save.
For the season, Seebold has appeared in five games and has posted a 1.59 ERA and a 0.88 WHIP. The 24-year-old has struck out an impressive 13 batters across 5.2 innings pitched, compared to only one walk and held opponents to a .190 average during that span.
