The Blue Jays are homeless again.

Though we all thought this morning that they would be playing their “home” games in Pittsburgh and sharing PNC Park with the Pirates, it turns out that won’t be the case.

The Pennsylvania Department of Health has denied the team’s request to make Pittsburgh their home, stating that having another MLB team travelling in and out of the state would add risk to its residents.

“To add travellers to this region for any reason, including for professional sports events, risks residents, visitors and members of both teams,” Dr. Rachel Levine said in a statement to The Associated Press.

What now? Who knows. The team had been looking into playing at Camden Yards in Baltimore as they’re seeking to play in a Major League facility rather than a minor-league complex such as the one at Sahlen Field in Buffalo.

The Jays will open the season in Tampa on Friday, play three games there, and then head to Washington. Their “home opener” will also be against the Nats right after that, so the Jays could play that series in Washington, but, after that, they need a solution.

With opening day on the horizon, MLB is still unsure of how many teams are going to play in the playoffs. According to Jon Heyman, MLB and the Players’ Association are re-opening talks about the possibility of expanding the playoff field to 16 teams this year. I mean, it makes sense from the league’s perspective, as it would result in more revenue, but it’s pretty hilarious that this is a discussion a few hours before the season is set to begin.

It would also massively increase Toronto’s odds of making the playoffs, so I’m not complaining.
